I&#8217;d never been to the state, Rob had but years earlier. So off to Montana\u00a0 we went. The photo above was my first glimpse of the state, and my first thought was, <em>Uh-oh. Winter.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The plane trip , two flights, wee sheer torture, crammed into a middle seat, no room to cross my legs, rest my elbows, and no food except goldfish crackers. And a bottle of water. Or a soft drink.Or coffee. Flying is no longer fun.<\/p>\n<p>But we landed at Kalispell &#8211; the airport for the Glacier National Park &#8211; it was ten at night &#8211; midnight our time &#8211; and I was too tired to notice much of anything except that I was cold. I think it was 44 degrees. The air smelled cold, clean,<\/p>\n<p>We checked into the Firebrand Hotel in downtown Whitefish. As we headed upstairs to our room, I kind of felt like I was inside a Stephen King novel. Such silence. But I slept nine hours.<\/p>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-36514\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/themysticalunderground.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/firebrand.jpg?resize=363%2C484&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" width=\"363\" height=\"484\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>From this spot the next morning, we toured the town on foot. By car.<\/p>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-36505\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/themysticalunderground.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/IMG_1053.jpg?resize=368%2C490&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" width=\"368\" height=\"490\" \/><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-36511\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/themysticalunderground.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/IMG_0723.jpg?resize=366%2C488&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" width=\"366\" height=\"488\" \/><\/p>\n<p>We visited a bookstore where the owner has a sticker on the front door that&#8217;s telling:<\/p>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-36522\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/themysticalunderground.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/bookstore.jpg?resize=308%2C410&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" width=\"308\" height=\"410\" \/><\/p>\n<p>This isn&#8217;t a diverse town. I saw only four African-Americans, heard Spanish only when we ate lunch at a Latino restaurant, and yet, it&#8217;s the only blue spot in Montana. The beauty is incomparable and so strange to me, as a Floridian, that it counts as a foreign country. Our first night, we ate dinner here:<\/p>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-36506\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/themysticalunderground.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/montana4.jpeg?resize=364%2C486&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" width=\"364\" height=\"486\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The little kid in the corner was having a good time scrambling around the deck.
