These days, it’s challenging to keep up with the unfolding horror show of this administration. & when I’ve tried, I just end up depressed. So recently, I focus on writing, my comfort zone, and remind myself to stay focused in the moment.

At the dog park where we take Nigel every afternoon, that now, in the moment, means relentless humidity, temps in the 90s, and a battle with mosquitos. BUT. No hurricanes & because it’s summer, the traffic around here is much lighter. Most of the time when I leave the neighborhood, the road in both directions is empty of cars. During the season, traffic in both directions consists of a steady stream of cars. And the dog park is empty except a small group of us who find the best spot in the shade, where’s there’s sometimes a breeze.

Nigel chases frisbees and balls at a leisurely pace, Abby and Orla play, & occasionally other panting dogs show up for a drink of water from the communal bowl we keep filled.

Recently, I learned that the county/state is going to rename part of Southern Boulevard that leads, eventually, to AIA along the beach and Mar a Lago. Yes, they’re going to rename it after trump – a convicted felon, grifter, pathological liar, narcissist etc etc etc. I’ll continue to call it Southern Boulevard just as I continue to call the gulf off Florida’s western coast the Gulf of Mexico.

Recently, Florida representative Maxwell Frost described his “sanitized tour” of the internment camp in the Everglades and I realized we no longer live in the U.S.

So on nights like this, at the end of a long, hot day, I anticipate a future where the republican party either grows a spine or ceases to exist and we get to visit Megan in Washington state and enter her world with the spectacular whales.

And we find a new protest where we can carry signs and exercise our first amendment rights.
