As a Bernie supporter, I was disappointed when Clinton won the nomination. But after watching both the Republican convention ( a study in agony and disgust) and the Democratic convention, the contrast is stark and obvious. Trump presented a Dystopian view of America – Hunger Games, Fahrenheit 411, 1984 – versus Clinton’s view of America as inclusive, compassionate, progressive, where all can prosper. Think President Snow from the Hunger Games (only I can fix it, Trump said) and President Obama, the audacity of hope.
For me, this convention humanized Clinton. I learned things about her that I didn‘t know. There has never been any doubt that she’s the most qualified person for the presidency, but in the back of my mind there was always a trust issue. What I heard during this convention, though, is that she has done what Scorpios sometimes do, worked quietly and diligently behind the scenes to improve the lives of ordinary people. The character testimony about Clinton during this convention was well orchestrated, but the genuine emotional pitches were profound.
The most moving speech for me came from a Muslim couple, Khizr Khan and his wife, who talked about the death of their son, Humayun, a captain in the U.S. Army. Their appearance was a direct rebuttal to Trump’s call to ban all Muslims from the U.S. It ended with Khan pulling a pocket-sized edition of the U.S. Constitution from his coat pocket and waving it in front of the camera. “Donald Trump, let me ask you. Have you even read the U.S. Constitution? I will gladly lend you my copy.”
As the mother of a daughter, I was also moved by Chelsea Clinton’s speech about her mom. Trump’s daughter also gave a speech about him as her father, but it wasn’t anywhere near the caliber of Chelsea’s speech. After all, Chelsea’s dad has already been prez. She came of age in the White House. And now her mother is the first woman nominated by a major political party as a presidential candidate. It makes Chelsea a first, too. Dad, now Mom.
Many of the policy highlights Clinton touched on were straight out of Bernie’s platform. I don’t know if it’s enough to pull all of his 13 million supporters into the fold, particularly among millennials, but I’m hopeful. After all, the alternative is too awful to even consider and that’s why Bernie acted with such grace by endorsing her. He knows what’s at stake. He gets it.
Life under a Trump presidency would be worse than all the Dystopian novels you’ve ever read. It wouldn’t just be The Handmaid’s Tale, The Hunger Games, 1984, Brave New World, The Giver, The Running Man, or The Children of Men. Life under Trump would amount to the collective conglomeration of all of these dark visions, a primal soup of disaster and misery that would propel the country and the world into a scenario that even our most gifted writers haven’t imagined yet.
November 8? For me, the choice is obvious. I embrace hope rather than fear, optimism rather than despair.
My thoughts about having a dual-woman ticket is that so many votes would be lost by the old-school Southern men who don’t accept the equality of women and who think women are less than men in virtually every aspect. These same men may not vote for Clinton, even tho she’s the only woman on the ticket. I listen daily to my husband and his friends denigrating the female gender. It’s insulting and totally ignorant, but they are stuck in their ridiculous attitudes. My husband is a Trump supporter. Makes me cringe. When everything is said and done, I believe Trump’s mouth and narcissism will keep him out of the Oval Office . But there are some points that worry me about Clinton, as well. In my opinion, she needs to change the way she waves at people. This seems a tiny thing in view of the whole picture, but she gives a straight-out-arm salute that the Hitler regime used, and while I doubt she realizes it, someone needs to tell her. I’ve read and heard a lot of folks mentioning it as a negative. I want to learn more about her running mate.
Choosing Warren as a running mate might have brought the death toll to Hillary’s potential, for such a stupid reason….that reason being there are hundreds of thousands of good ole boys in the South who are male chauvinists (sp?) and still think women should be barefoot and pregnant and don’t have a brain. A duel-woman ticket would have lost a bunch of votes she will otherwise likely now get. I suspect she knew that! Sorry state of affairs, that there are so very many men whose minds live in the Dark Ages! Don’t get me wrong….I love men…have a hubby and three sons….but have learned a lot about them BECAUSE of this!
Every other ticket, except for two – McCain-Palin and Mondale-Ferraro – have featured only one sex.
I initially had some concerns about Tim Kaine as well. But after much thought, and after learning about the man, I believe the choice of Kaine for VP was a well-thought-out stroke of genius. Because…..he brings a fresh new face into the public eye; a background not tarnished by any kind of scandal or negative actions, and right now, that is exactly what this country needs in a “second in command”. He brings no heavy garbage, no hidden baggage, into the race, at least as far as anyone has been able to dig up. This is extremely important, considering that Hillary DOES have some stuff putting a small cloud of doubts around her. I think Kaine will balance out that, and he is a welcome change….
I would have preferred warren, but understand why clinton didn’t tap her. Kaine…well, we’ll see. His Spanish is good!
My response is a tad off subject but you brought up the Scorpio aspect for Hillary. I have been thinking all along that the Scorpio aspect can sometimes be Hillary’s own worst enemy. I have though of how Bill Clinton and Obama are Leos and how in different ways they show that. It would be interesting if Trish and perhaps a few other astrologers would devote a site just to discuss politics that include the astrology of the candidates. I guess there are astrologers who do this from time to time, but how about a whole site just for that? I know the prevailing view of how most people think of astrology as not serious. But it is interesting and it works. Bernie Sanders is so Virgo practical. And blah blah blah. My 2 pennies for the morning.
The best astrological site about world events and politicians is starlight news. Google it, Adele. The woman is phenomenal.
Thanks Trish
I’ve been following her predictions since 2008, I think. She may be the best mundane astrologer on the planet.
I totally agree, Trish. I also was disappointed in Tim Kaine’s nomination for VP, but I’ve learned so many impressive things about him, and now I’m comfortable voting Dem in the fall. As you said, the alternative is unacceptable. I also have optimism that I didn’t have a week ago. 🙂
I feel more optimistic than I did after the republican convention, that’s for sure!
I heard Sen. Wicker on NPR this a.m. say that he thought Hillary’s speech sounded like something out of the early ’90s, and that the solution to our problems could be right in our hands…and what did he mean by that? Our cell phones. Yes, he said that. Okay, good luck with that, Wicker. Who you gonna call, Ghostbusters?
