A Dog’s Purpose

When I first read this book, I was blown away. I mean, c’mon, this is about reincarnation from a dog’s point of view. And now it’s a movie, to be released on January 27, 2017. I’m already in line! And the dog’s first life is- yes! – that of a Golden Retriever!

I may re-read the book before I see the movie. But from the trailer, it looks as if the movie follows the book closely.

I’ve read this book, and it’s sequel. Laughed, cried, was amazed. There’s never been a doubt in my mind that dogs have souls, and although they may change breeds, I think they remain canines. I have the conviction that they return to their human family or to the human who was/is the canine equivalent of a dog/human soulmate, and always bring with them some identifiable characteristics that are undeniably the same as their previous incarnation. My Lab has an interesting history in this current life. She came from a very respected and award-winning AKC Labrador Retriever breeder. The breeder has a chocolate stud and a black female, who of course are not supposed to “get together”. But they did, and a small litter of pups was the result. Storm is purebred, but because the litter didn’t meet the color standard for pedigrees, (Storm is blackchocolate, like a shiny dark, dark chocolate Hershey bar), the breeder couldn’t sell them. I won’t go into HOW she came to me; it’s too long a story, but I got her when she was 4 months old. She was born on 8-19-2012, and is now 4 years old. She isn’t mine. I am HERS. I couldn’t love her more if she were one of my children. Some folks might think that is terrible, but it is what it is. She will soon complete training to be a service dog because I now need one, but I’m virtually certain she has been a service animal previously, because she recognizes and understands the commands used for service dogs. Since she came to me, she always knows when I am a few minutes away from having a horrific Parkinson’s episode which resembles an epileptic seizure but isn’t, (I don’t have a seizure disorder), and she will nudge my knee with her muzzle and make a soft whining sound. I discovered via experience that when she does this, she is alerting me to the coming event, and is saying, “TAKE YOUR MEDICATION!” There is more, but no need to describe. Just must say that she is a part of me and I am a part of her, and out love for each other has no boundaries. The books A DOG’S JOURNEY and A DOG’S PURPOSE are wonderful tributes to these creatures who know nothing more for us than unconditional love.
