In late November, a storm in the Bering sea brought winds of over 90 mph and wave heights of nearly 53 feet. What was really interesting about this storm is how rapidly it intensified. The intensification met the bombogenesis criteria, an atmospheric drop of 24 millibars in 24 hours. But this storm went beyond that 24 millibar drop.
In just 24 hours, it dropped from 1002 milllibars to 947 millibars, a drop of 55 millibars. Then it dropped another 3 millibars, which made it the strongest storm on the planet at this time. Essentially, this story was the equivalent of a Category 3 hurricane.
The location of this system and its rapid intensification caused me to wonder if this storm was an anomaly, perhaps due to climate change, or if these storms happen every winter around the Aleutians.
According to NASA’s website Earth Observatory, “The Bering Sea area has hosted some notable storms in recent years, such as the low pressure system that slammed into Nome, Alaska, on November 8 and 9, 2011, with wind gusts up to 74 knots (85 miles per hour). Exactly three years later in 2014, Alaskans braced for another storm that was expected to intensify into the strongest low-pressure systems ever recorded in the Bering Sea.”
That storm, the remnants of Category 5 Super Typhoon Nuri, reached 924 millibars, which set a record for an extratropical storm in the Pacific Ocean. For reference, Hurricane Katrina made landfall at 920 millibars.
So has climate change made storms like these more powerful? Sean Sublette, a meteorologist with Climate Central, a nonprofit group that studies climate change, says that climate change makes bad storms like Harvey, Irma, and Maria even worse. “And in the case of a really bad storm, climate change can make it totally disastrous or catastrophic.”
But Scott Pruett, a climate change denier and head of the EPA, didn’t want to talk about climate change in the aftermath of this year’s hurricane season. His mantra – that now wasn’t the time to talk about it – became that of the entire trump administration.
“The most dangerous myth that we have bought into as a society is not the myth that climate isn’t changing or that humans aren’t responsible,” said Katharine Hayhoe, director of the Climate Science Center at Texas Tech University. “It’s the myth that ‘It doesn’t matter to me.’”
So here we are, the hurricane season officially over (on November 30), the ferocity of this year’s hurricanes fading in memory here in Florida – but not in Puerto Rico.
Nearly two months after Maria slammed into the island with 155 mph winds, about half the island is still without electrical power. Take a look at these statistics to see how 2017’s hurricane season weighed in. Hint: it was the most expensive year ever in terms of damage $202.6 BILLION in damages.
So, the question becomes: what magnitude of a disaster will it take to convince climate change deniers that yes, we humans leave a mighty big footprint.
Possible reply to Lauren’s question how did we give a person like Trump so much power. (Paraphrased Lauren’s comment.) I have absolutely no doubt whatsoever, although this subject is a favorite conspiracy theory, that the control of our country is in the hands of the well-hidden Secret Government. That organization, its disguised members, are the powerful puppet-masters handling the strings and Americans are the puppets. I know many disagree. But there is a mountain of highly credible evidence supporting its existence and activities. There is one other comment I’d like to add: Many, many respected and valid ‘prophets’ have long predicted that America will have an Anti-Christ in the White House with hundreds of thousands of rabid followers, and after his reign of terrible atrocities, a person on the “Christed” frequency will be in the Oval Office. Not Christ Himself, but a person on that frequency…..who will restore and lift up the energies of our beautiful country. I personally agree with this, and more and more every day my conviction becomes stronger. Only Time will tell, but it gives me hope that all is not lost, and that we WILL recover from this nightmare.
Hopefully he;s driven out. But that would put pense in the white house and he’s certainly no christ frequency – although he thinks he is!
When Cayce and Montgomery were making predictions, they were each in deep states
of altered Consciousness, where apparently Time doesn’t exist. That probably explains
why their timing was skewed. Another individual, Dr. Jeffery Goodman, also adressed
these issues in his book WE ARE THE EARTHQUAKE GENERATION, and he is a geophysicist. His predictions were accurate, but like Cayce and Montgomery, his Timing was also off. Arthur Ford was Montgomery’s discarnate Source, but I did notice that occasionally in her latest texts, her own thoughts and opinions seeped thru….happens sometimes to all mediums,I think. Seth, through Jane Roberts, always seemed on point, tho. The ‘mind’, and ‘consciousness’, have infinite potential.
I also have to comment that I have been absolutely amazed at how much power the President has – and how much power we, a “democracy” have given to one man to dismantle the government. How is it possible that trump has been given so much power to make the kinds of dangerous and infantile appointments and decisions? One man can decide the entire role of American science? One man could, in a fit of anger, put us into another war, possibly with nuclear weapons? He has virtually the power of a dictator, and the American people should be evaluating that power, so easily given to a mentally ill or unfit individual.
I think we should leave “convince” off the discussion, since 98% of all climate and earth scientists agree on climate change and global warming. What we should talk about is how to get rid of stupid, willful, feudal and dangerous people like Trump and the people he has put into power, people who have a spiteful, financial, or dark ages religious agenda and that is all there is to it for them. There is a war on science, the arts, and education currently. Trump has intentionally put in positions of power unqualified people – like the current head of NASA (NASA!) who is a climate denying evangelical with hardly any background in science. Ca n you imagine what it must be like for the scientists of NASA to have to deal with that!
I love that the President of France has made available grants and asylum in France through the duration of the Trump regime for American climate scientists. If you haven’t heard of this yet, check it out! But it’s pretty shocking to think that that is going on……..American intellectuals and scientists are seeking other countries to work in.
Atlanta had 11 inches of snow over the weekend. Breaking record snowfalls all over the southeastern U.S. Unprecedented. California is being literally burned to ashes. Hundreds of thousands of acres…and yes, that number is currently correct….decimating everything in the paths of the wildfires being further fueled by the annual hot and powerful Santa Anna winds. In the eastern areas of our country, and in the western areas of our country, there are now MILLIONS of humans with no electricity. How do we even begin to recover from these catastrophes?
Insufficient manpower and insufficient funds to bring the fires under control which are now only 15% controlled and expected to get worse, and shovel out from under huge mounds of frozen precipitation which is expected to re-occur in a couple of days. I am reminded every day of the movie THE DAY AFTER TOMORROW and cannot imagine the utter stupidity of people who deny climate change. Years ago Edgar Cayce predicted this, and so did Ruth Montgomery. Their timing may have been a bit off, but the predictions were spot on. My intuition seems to indicate that the rapidly changing surface of California will result in enormous shifts in the tectonic plates harboring the fault lines causing earthquakes that are beyond the #10 on the earthquake scale. BAD.
Cayce and Montgomery were way off in timing, but they definitely got the rest of it right!
And all this after a horrific summer of destruction.
