Is it a synchronicity that 48 hours after Donald Trump announced that he is a nationalist that 10 bombs were sent to prominent Democrats, including two presidents and a vice president? Or, was it cause and effect? In other words, did the bomber or bombers hear that Trump called himself a nationalist—one of us, they might’ve thought—and went to the post office with their bombs. I would say that both are true. They no doubt had their bombs ready before Trump made the announcement, but when they heard him declare that he was one of them, a white nationalist—that’s what they assumed—then that was the cue.
Trump, when questioned, said he never heard the word white was used in front of nationalism. Of course, that was a lie. He lies every day and it’s documented every day. Earlier in his campaign, he said he’d never heard of David Duke, the former Grand Banana (aka Wizard) of the KKK. That again was a lie…and has been documented. The Washington Post and New York Times note that Trump knows enough about Duke to have denounced him several times in past decades when he was a Democrat.
Now they are bedfellows. Duke tweeted that of course nationalists are white nationalists. Look at Trump’s rally. It was 99.9% white, he said. And the Daily Stormer, the American neo-Nazi, white supremacist, holocaust-denying web site cheered loudly after Trump’s announcement. “He is one of us!” They bellowed.
The White House responded that the definition of nationalism is “loyalty and devotion to a nation.” It sounds like patriotism, which is “love for or devotion to one’s country,” per Merriam Webster.
But the definition of nationalism also includes “exalting one nation above all others and placing primary emphasis on promotion of its culture and interests as opposed to those of other nations or supranational groups.” This exclusionary aspect is not shared by patriotism.
But let’s get beyond calling these people nationalists or white nationalists. Let’s call them what they are: neo-Nazis and white supremacist. Trump has identified himself with them, embraced them. Sure sounds like he is one of them.
Of course, if he thought that he would be better off distancing himself from the white nationalist crowd, he would do so. No problem. That’s because he is a free-range president, who only thinks about himself on every issue.

Trish and Rob, by no means have I “gone to the other side” occupied by my family. I maintain everything I’ve said and felt about Trump. What HAS changed is ME. I’m finding that when I sustain negative and hateful feelings, my illness gets worse, and I recognize that my Spirit feels dirty and soiled. For these reasons and others, I’m trying really, really hard to keep myself in a place of love and peace; trying to avoid the impacts on me when I allow myself to indulge in negative thinking. This extends to Trump and the current political war. This is not a bid for sympathy. Just trying to explain where I am now regarding the Trump situation. I feel exactly the same about him as I always have, but I can no longer allow my thoughts and feelings about him
to affect me and have therefore shifted into ‘neutral’. I read what I wrote on the blog about him some time ago and it sickens me. I’m trying so, so hard,Guys, to follow the Path of Peace that my Soul has chosen….Pagan, a Peaceful Warrior. I understand that my end-time for this incarnation is in sight, and as a born energy worker, I’m vulnerable to energies. There is so much happening in my domestic life that I don’t want to spare a microscopic atom of even more negativity. Trump? My feelings, intuition, and opinions about him haven’t shifted. But I’ve had no choice than to shift my PERCEPTIONS into a space that doesn’t bring me more pain. And when the family gets into their political rants supporting the man, I leave the room and close my door or I’m aware I could be drawn into a battle I don’t have the energy to fight. I am alone in my feelings and thoughts about the president, thus I keep silent. I should not have posted my comments on the blog yesterday, and for that I apologize. It won’t happen again, I promise. I’m blocking myself as much as I can from the political scene.

I fear this country is headed for a civil war. We the people have the power to either prevent it, or to continue sowing the seeds of it. It’s up to us. It starts with trying to understand each other. When I ask a simple and very specific question like What exactly has he done that’s bad for the country?, and the only answers I can get out of anyone are along the lines of He’s a big fat ugly mean racist liar-head!, it’s difficult for me get a sense of what you want from your president. I actually agree that he’s mean and ugly and often stretches the truth, but when I list point-by-point all the things he has accomplished so far, I’m greeted with blank stares by people who have never heard those things before, or refuse to even acknowledge them. I’m still waiting for someone to tell me why the tax cut was bad for the country, why the new trade deals are bad for the country, why better relations with North Korea are bad for the country, why secure borders and sensible immigration policies are bad for the country. Getting answers to those questions would go a long way toward my understanding of your position. Instead, all I hear is people shouting “Trump is a racist!” as if shouting it loudly enough will somehow make it true.
The media is to blame for some of it. CNN and MSNBC and the others have been waging war on this president since before he was elected. Pretending they’re telling the truth and Fox News is full of lies is disingenuous. The fact is, none of them are reporting the news anymore. What you get are opinions and editorials from both sides, and you have to dig deeper to find out what’s really happening in the world. CNN is flat-out lying to you. Fox News is flat-out lying to you. Both are extensions of their respective political parties. Same goes for all the others. I don’t know how to fix that, except to stop listening to all of them.
In the meantime, the least we can do is talk to each other. Stop screaming “Trump is a racist!” and start exploring our differences in productive ways. Ask our political opponents why they feel the way they do, and give thoughtful answers when they ask the same of us.
Our country is at stake.

Okay, let me try to answer your questions from my point of view. All worthwhile, by the way.
First of all, Trump gutted environmental programs, endangered spieces programs, opened our monuments and park systems to mining (mostly for countries that are not US), opened up oil exploration in the pristine waters of the Arctic and West Coast (Oregon has recently said NO), continues to push dirty sources of power such as coal and fracking for gas deposits that destroy whole water eco-systems. Those are the environmental issues I have with him.
He then toured Europe and insulted our allies and acted like a whipped dog in Helsinki, which looked very much like a traitor in my eyes. I don’t see better relations with North Korea, they appear to be doing what they have always done.
He goes to rallies and inspires his base to hate ANYONE that disagrees with him.
He separates children from their parents at the border. As a person with an educational background in human development and family studies – that is a gigantic NO NO. It is inhumane. Period.
He has increased our deficit by a trillion+ dollars, all the while telling us how much better off financially we are with him in office. Well, I am not better off. My 401K took a beating this year and is now worth less than it was last year. The tax break gave me absolutely nothing to even consider worth noting. A few dollars, nothing more. Now his minions in Congress are talking about balancing the budget on the back of “entitlments” such as Social Security and Medicare, programs we paid into for the entirety of our working lives. As for the the tariff war he has implemented, I had dinner with a friend that was an Economics professor, he said it was a very bad idea – all the while continuing to stand behind Trump, by the way.
I do not believe people should be able to enter this country illegally, I do believe we should treat all human beings with empathy and kindness, however. Finding a solution to what is happening in their country might be a great way for Trump to show some “statesmanship.”
So to answer your question; he has done more to make me feel sad, less secure financially, less secure physically, and separated me from people I care very much about. Those are the reasons I despise this man. More jobs will not make me feel better. Even if my 401K soared, I would not feel better. There is so much more to this world than money, and that is ALL this man cares about.
I don’t watch mainstream news on a regular basis. The 24-hour news cycle is a big part of the problem with talking heads giving their opinions, instead of just reporting the days happenings. I miss Walter Cronkite. (Whew, that ages me.)

At least you’re willing to communicate. We need more of that – from our politicians, from our media, and most of all from our friends, family members, and even online acquaintances. All that I’ve said is simply a reaction to what’s going on in the everyday world, a natural reaction when one is appalled by a person’s behavior, namely Trump’s. But if we shift to a higher mode of reality, a different picture emerges.
If everyone would accept Trump—even his worst detractors and all those who fear he is moving us toward autocratic rule and endangering democracy—and tell him he’s wonderful, just doing a fabulous job, that he can do no wrong…then guess what? Hard as it seems to believe, he would vanish in a poof. So, in a sense, you’re on the right track, but for the wrong reasons.
Trump’s very existence relies on conflict and controversy and hitting back at every slight. Once he loses his reason for being, literally the essence of who he is, he would no longer exist, at least not in this reality.

The MAGA bomber sent two pipe bombs to Maxine Waters. Tonight, not two days after the bomber tried to blow up Waters, Trump went after her again at a rally tonight. He threw out her name like red meat for the base. Sick.
I understand what you are saying, CJ. I have had to do much the same thing in order to keep myself from going over the edge after losing my husband. The 24-hour news cycle feeds our worst fears and insecurities. That’s why I have put some distance between some of my friends and family. They trigger the anger and resentment I feel towards Trump.Yesterday was good, in that we all finally got to express the anger and emotions we’ve been carrying around for the last two years, on both sides, but have been unable to express because of the huge divide in our country. A bit like the steam from a tea pot on the stove. We are all on edge with the recent violence, but we can no longer talk things out with people we used to be able to do that with. It is no longer safe,not if we want to maintain those relationships beyond this administration.

Most of us (including me) from what I can tell think he is a f#cking dickhead and don’t know whether to just laugh, be frightened of what he can do to the world, or both.
Of course there are similar “Nationalists” over here who think he is wonderful.

It’s the same in Europe, the right-wing white nationalist fringe like him. Here in the U.S., the nationalists used to be a fringe of the Republican Party. Now they are at the center of it, and regular non-racist conservatives have been pushed to the fringe, or right out of the party.
All we hear about from the Republicans is this caravan of people walking toward the United States from Honduras, who are a thousand miles away. They number about the student body of two high schools. They’re coming for jobs, for a better life, just like everyone else who has immigrated here over the past 200 years. But the Republican make it a race issue—brown people coming to rape and kill. Just racist nonsense to stir up the base.
What I find so disturbing is the massive number of people that continue to support him despite his constant lying, hate-filled speech he spews on a daily basis, and the obvious fascist dictators he embraces. Many of these people are my friends and family. Normally kind, educated, successful people. I’m at a loss to explain this phenomenon.

Please show me one example of the president inciting violence. Be specific, please. Not an innuendo, not a off-the-cuff remark taken out of context and repeated over an over by MSNBC hosts, but his actual words, in context. Video preferred, but a transcript will be acceptable, as long as there is sufficient context to discern intent. Compare and contrast your example with the words of Maxine Waters, Hillary Clinton, and Eric Holder, to name just a few of the prominent Democrats whose recent words have actively encouraged violence against those who disagree with them.
And when you finish that assignment, show me an example of the president using hateful or racist language, or supporting or participating in any racist organization. Same constraints as above with regard to context, please. Video preferred.

As for the tax cut, would you like to see my tax returns? Pay stubs from before and after the tax cut? I don’t believe words cause bombs to be sent through the mail. I believe crazy people who send bombs through the mail cause bombs to be sent through the mail.

Words matter, especially when they come from the president. He has a large platform, the largest in the world and he’s using it like some angry teenage boy.

I am a nationalist. I came to this country when I was 8 months old and adopted it as my own. I became a US citizen on my 19th birthday. I love America. This country has given me everything I have, and I owe my allegiance and my loyalty to it. I spent 3 years in the military, and would gladly have given my life to protect my country and its people. I almost did once. I believe America is the greatest country on earth, and I believe the American people represent the best the world has to offer. We are a nation of immigrants, an amalgamation of people and cultures whose whole is greater than the sum of its parts. I believe our system of government is a shining example of what the rest of the world should strive to be. I put the American people first, before those of any other nation, including the one I came from. I am a nationalist.

There are people who call themselves “white nationalists”. They are racists, and they are filled with hate. They despise people who look like me, because I am not one of them. If not, then why does a different standard apply to Donald Trump?
David Duke can tweet whatever he wants. If he supports Donald Trump, and I support Donald Trump, does that make us alike? Or am I supposed to automatically oppose anything (or anyone) he supports? That would make me no better than him. And I am better than him.

You seem to think misguided means “thinks differently from me”. It does not.
And nationalist does not mean what the so-called “white nationalists” want it to mean, either. There’s already a word for them, so use that one. Let nationalist mean what it has always meant.

Still, it seems you believe words can be redefined at will to mean whatever you want them to mean. So if by “ruining the country”, you mean making the country stronger, creating a tax environment that leads to economic prosperity and creates jobs, negotiating trade deals that encourage fairness and transparency among our trading partners – then yes, he is indeed “ruining the country”. Trump made no mention of the FBI in his comments about the arrest of the bomber, and he has not called former presidents who were targets. More shameful behavior. Unfortunately,Sayoc, who is a registered Republican and avid Trump supporter, actually believes what Trump says and listened closely to Trump’s vitriolic public speeches.
I could not agree more. Of course he knows what the buzz words are, and he uses them mercilessly. I pray we will take back at least one house of Congress in a few weeks.
