Thanks, Sheila. No, I didn’t actually create the Grail diary. It was made by a very talented and experienced prop maker in Europe. I merely upgraded the insert items (bookmarks) throughout the diary to make it more authentic. I replaced all the various banknotes with genuine vintage bills, I sourced a vintage 1920’s train ticket, a 1930’s-era postcard from Venice, Italy, and a vintage 1800’s photograph to accompany one of the letters pasted into the book. All of these pieces lend the journal a more authentic period feel when you page through the book, so it’s easy to believe that it truly was written by a scholar of medieval history in the early 20th century.

That is very impressive that you sourced all those genuine vintage items! I love stuff like that. There was a published book that came out in 1991 called Griffin and Sabine. It was supposed to be a correspondence between two people and it had removable artifacts. It was very innovative at the time and very popular. You and Rob could do one to continue the Indiana Jones world.
Probably not, at least not to sell. Indiana Jones is LucasFilm’s – now Disney’s. I remember that Griffin and Sabine book! Loved it.
Very true. But Sheila’s idea was accomplished by another Indy fan extraordinaire – Anthony Magnoli – the original master Grail diary maker who inspired all others to follow.
In 2008, Lucasfilm recruited him to write The Lost Journal of Indiana Jones, a travel diary written by Indy himself, chronicling his many adventures (cinematic, TV series, literary, and computer games). This tie-in book for the Indy 4 film featured a simulated leather-cover and elastic band – exactly like the Grail diary – and included many glued-in bookmark inserts which reference Indy’s adventures.
Each written entry and bookmark item brings a sentimental smile to Indy fans, and the book is clearly a love letter to our favorite adventurer.

Considering I’ve been a devoted Indy fan since 1986, I’ve spent decades studying every nuance of the character (for all the good it does me). So I rightfully consider myself a scholar of Indiana Jones. Even so, I still discover new facts, bits of trivia, and previously unnoticed details with each subsequent viewing of the movies, so it’s fair to say that my apprenticeship is for life!
