The Mystical Underground: Jeff Lindsay: Dexter And Riley Wolfe

A new episode of The Mystical Underground is live! “Jeff Lindsay: Dexter And Riley Wolfe”:

Join Trish and Rob for a conversation with…

Jeff Lindsay, the award-winning author of the NY Times Best-Selling ‘Dexter’ novels upon which the hit Showtime TV show “Dexter” was based. His books have appeared in 44 languages around the world. Although he’s a full-time writer now, Jeff has worked as an actor, comic, director, playwright, MC, bouncer, teacher, columnist, TV host, singer, songwriter, composer, musician, steel worker, sportscaster, dishwasher, screenwriter, cook, detective, gardener and sailing instructor. In Hollywood, Jeff worked 4 years for Steve Allen, did improv, and led a Noh-Wave band, The Fabulous Dorx. He went on to work for 6 years as a story analyst, script doctor and screenwriter, with John Davis, Joe Dante, Mike Finell, Warner Bros, Fries Entertainment, Fox, and others, and even had breakfast with Steven Spielberg. He has taught writing and screenwriting at the university level and at many workshops around the country, and has written more two dozen produced plays.

We should also say that we have known Jeff and his writer wife, Hilary Hemingway, for a couple of decades…and I’ve always stood clear of Jeff when he’s in his kitchen with a sharp knife in his hand. (That’s a Dexter joke.)

I was thinking that you should try to interview write/director Josh Boone.
I heard him on Whitley Strieber’s podcast, and I just went and saw ‘The New Mutants’ at the cinema on Wednesday, which he co-wrote.
But what interests me is his new Stephen King TV series ‘The Stand’ and the project he is working on about Whitley Strieber’s life.

Wow. Thank you for the suggestion. I’ll start googling him tomorrow for an email address. Is The New Mutants” good?

      • Darren B says:

I was never into the X-Men movies to be honest, I just went to see what Josh had made and co-wrote.
It’s pretty much a visual metaphor for the Native American myth of “feeding the right wolf” but told using bears instead.
        It’s OK.
        I’d say 3 stars maybe.

Were movie theaters in your area closed at any point in the pandemic?

          • Darren B says:

Yeah, they closed around March, then there was only the drive-in that was allowed to open with social distancing rules for going to the cafe and toilets.
And a few months later when the Covid was under control in Queensland the cinemas opened up with social distancing rules, but since Hollywood wasn’t releasing new movies the cinemas were playing old classics like ‘Titanic’, ‘Fight Club’, ‘the Lord of the Rings movies, the Harry Potter movies and the Star Wars films.
Recently Hollywood let films like ‘TENET’ and ‘The New Mutants’ to hit Aussie screens.
The state of Victoria though went back into lockdown when Covid took off there a few months back and the cinemas were closed again.
I think the cinemas are still closed down there now, but in all other Australian states the cinemas are operating on social distancing rules.

Interesting chat with Jeff, and I’m glad he enjoyed his visits to Australia.
I attended a talk he gave at the Brisbane Writer’s Festival with my two sons, who are fans of the Dexter novels and TV series, but I’ve never read or watched anything Dexter though, as it doesn’t sound like my cup of tea.
I’d be interested in catching that new Riley Wolfe movie when it comes out though.
And here’s a suggestion for a title for Jeff’s third book – ‘Fool Me Thrice’ or ‘Fool Me 3rice’
Which implies that you can get fooled once more, even if you think that you can’t 🙂
