For most of us, July 4th used to mean a long weekend to travel, spend with family & friends – and maybe attend a fireworks display.
Historically, this is the day in 1776 when the Declaration of Independence was adopted. You know, where we declared we were a sovereign nation ruled by laws, three equal branches of government, and NO KINGS!
It became a federal holiday in 1941.
Then along came trump. Now masked ICE agents snatch people off the streets, outside of Home Depots, out of groves where they’re working. Now we have the Everglades Alcatraz, which essentially is a concentration camp. Trump ignores the courts, bombs another country, imposes absurd tariffs on goods from other countries, hawks a trump phone, bitcoins, gold sneakers. Well, you’ve seen the news. And daily it gets worse, particularly with the big horrific bill the spineless repugs have passed.
If there’s a protest like NO KINGS on July 4, I’ll gladly attend. But celebrate? Forget it. Celebrate what? Our loss of freedoms? The steep and dangerous decline this administration has ushered in? The fact that we have a convicted felon in the white house whose MO as a grifter and a perennial liar is destroying democracy and all democratic norms?
I’ll sit this one out unless there’s a protest. & I’ll keep looking for more protests to attend.
I would amend the post to read: “a mentally ill convicted felon in the White House.” because that’s exactly the situation.

My dear friend, you said it all! Shame shame shame on everyone in the GOP who allowed this monster to take a wrecking ball to our beautiful democracy. How could they do this to their constituents and their own families? The monster is destroying our environment, our health, our relationship with our allies, our children’s education, our colleges and universities, making the country less safe by destroying our relationships with our allies, and making everything less affordable. Many thanks to the corrupt Supreme Court majority who handed the monster the power to do anything he wants.
Amen. He’s a monster.
