The 27 Club, #137, #23, Writers and Hollywood

Most of us know who these two guys are right? Jeff Bridges and Robert Duval. It’s a scene from Crazy Heart, for which Bridges won a well-deserved Oscar. There’s a scene in the movie where we see the door of the motel room where Bridges is staying – #27.  I suddenly sat up straighter, “There it is! The 27 Club,” I exclaimed.

Megan, who was watching the movie with us, looked over with that college expression – a roll of the eyes, brows lifting slightly. “What’re you talking about, mom?”

27 is a number so well known among musicians that it’s referred to as The 27 Club. Kurt Cobain, Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, Jim Morrison, and Brian Jones  died at age 27. We wrote about this in our book, under the clusters chapter, The 27 Club.  But just because it appeared in  Crazy Heart, is it a synchronicity? Probably not. Crazy Heart is based on a novel by Thomas Cobb. Cobb is now a professor of creative writing and literature at Rhode Island College. But Cobb used to be a country music writer and it’s likely that he knew about  the synchronicity of #27. Maybe it was included in the movie as an inside joke.

Then again, would a producer go to the trouble of creating #27 for a motel room door or hunt down an appropriate door with that number on it, just to please the novelist? Or, did the novelist actually know the history of #27? That’s the mystery.
Are these inside jokes more common than we realize or are they actual synchros? In the short-lived TV series FlashForward, nearly everyone in the world blanks out for 137 seconds and glimpses his or her future. 137, which we wrote about in a synchro last year, could be another insider joke. Novelist Robert Sawyer might have known about that number and its connection to physicist Wolfgang Pauli, who considered it as a death number. Then again, maybe he didn’t know about it.

Another instance of  a possible insider’s joke involves the number 23. There’s a considerable amount of data about this number, which we wrote about here, and which crops up time and again in the TV series Lost. But was the inference intentional or accidental?

The real mystery about number clusters is whether the story creator knows about the synchro data.

We've done a couple of posts on the word verification synchros. Whenever you get a good one, just note it – that's what we've all been doing. Some are hysterically funny!

  2. Gwendolyn H. Barry says:

there's this other thing.. I'm wondering if anyone feels this happening to them… as they consume the blogosphere?
The word for word verification is sometimes prescience or prognosticative (I'm allowed to make up my own words…right?) referring to what you have written or are about to write or what you are thinking… now I think the word verification system pulls from posts…. and that's why this uncanny feeling of … the internet reading my mind.

    OK… fa-sin-ate-ing!
    REally, no really!
    shit guys.
(now hang on here…) I am really zoomed to find out the significance of the '27 club' because I really had no idea. Very kewl. And I adore storing up such trivia! Ta.
Yet.. (been a bit challenging last year or so….LOL) and my bday numerical significant is – 27 / 9 … u c what I mean?
add to that the 3 card reading I received on radio from my guest ended with the Tower… well,
I read my emailed SYNCHRONICITY posts with great enthusiasm for the cheer, uplift, or mind boggle… you follow me I'm sure.
my first reaction was "shit!" LYFAO
    However
    I'm laughing about now. Gods.
Now I have to go to link on the 23.

"synchro data" must absolutely be connective to numerical sequences and outstanding numbers. We could probably redefine – create new a kind of "prime #" into a "syncho data"
Numbers are THE language of the evolving universe. yeah?

thx for shaking me out of complacency today!

Sansego – I just looked up your chart. Your saturn return was in April 2001.

  5. Trish and Rob MacGregor says:

It's 28-29. The second one occurs between 58-60, the third around 90. About climbing to the peak? I wish I knew what to tell you. Jupiter returns tends to be good, though – and happen every 12 years. It's when Jupiter returns to where it was when you were born.

  6. Sansego says:

I heard that "Saturn Returns" around age 28. For me, I had the best experience of my life that year. Its been downhill ever since. How do I get back to that mountain peak after being in the valley so long?

  7. Trish and Rob MacGregor says:

Jen – your first saturn return usually happens around the age of 29. Send me your birth data and I'll tell you when it starts.

  8. Jeninacide says:

I'm 27 years old right now- and that is supposedly the year of your Saturn Return which is something my best friend is obsessed with. An interesting number, year of life, a time of change!

  9. Trish and Rob MacGregor says:

    Thanks for the info, Eric!

  10. Eric says:

Gretchen Wilson knows the meaning of The 27 Club very well. She explains the how and why in our book The 27s–The Greatest Myth of Rock & Roll.

When it comes to Thomas Cobb I suspect that he was well aware of the significance of 27 and how it pertains to music. In fact, the number is not only a key synchronicity in modern music, but also throughout history.

  11. Nancy says:

I wonder if there is any way to find out. I'll be interested to hear what Rosaria finds out. BTW her daughter and son in law are awesome singers.

Loved Crazy Heart. Jeff Bridges definitely deserved the Oscar.

  12. Trish and Rob MacGregor says:

Don't think I'd be tempting the fates, either, even though I'm way over 27!

LAkeviewer – when you find out, definitely let us know. Have always been curious about this and don't really know any musicians around here to ask.

  13. lakeviewer says:

I'll ask my musician daughter and hubby. Then, I'll get back to you.

  14. GYPSYWOMAN says:

fantastic story – but about the knowing or not knowing – if i knew, i certainly would not want to be the one tempting/inviting the law of attraction with a dog tag or anything else – joke or not! course, i know both these boys are over the age – however –

    neat post!!!

  15. Trish and Rob MacGregor says:

So it's got to be something she's aware of. Maybe most musicians are aware of Club 27. Interesting.

  16. 67 Not Out (Mike Perry) says:

I just read that Gretchen Wilson, country singer, has a #27 on a dogtag on a necklace and her official fan club is called Club 27.
