…has managed to fracture democracy into small pieces now gasping to remain alive.

He has certainly exposed where democracy is weak – and where’s it’s powerful and continues to thrive. & that power lies with its people. With us.

Trump’s ice is a gestapo  like that of every other  authoritarian gov’t. Intended to arrest, shoot, kill, imprison the alleged bad guys. For Hitler, it was the Jews. Even if you’re not Jewish, read Anne Frank’s diary if you haven’t already. It’s heartbreaking and a brutal reminder of what awaits Americans if the dems don’t take back the house and the senate.

Or read up on what Chile was like under Pinochet. Or Venezuela under Maduro and Chavez. On substack, you’ll find Caracas Chronicles, which details what life is like in that country now. It’s not great. It’s not freedom or democracy. After trump kidnapped Maduro and his wife, he made it sound like the country was free again. Ha.  He was interested in their oil.

I see this moron’s face, hear his voice, and I nearly puke. A visceral, intuitive reaction. Even his hair leaves me nauseated. His orange makeup. His overweight, clumsy body. He lied constantly during his first term. So how could anyone who had been paying attention believe his promises to lower the cost of everything? To not start any forever war?

Well, unless you watched Fox News or some other right wing media & basically learned not to trust your own eyes, your own senses, and fell down what is now called the rabbit hole. But frankly, the term is an insult to rabbits!

Call it  what it is: brainwashing. A cult. Not much different than other cults – good ole Jim Jones & his ilk  like trump attract people who need to identify with… well, something bigger than themselves. An idea. A tribe. Trump tapped into the dark recesses of the American soul, into racism, misogyny, general bigotry against people different than they are. 

Look at this man’s face. Really look.

At his attempt to appear tough, desirable, like a warrior who fights for you, for your freedoms.

Yeah. Now head to your bathroom and vomit.

Humanity vs. trump

In the past, when you said that someone or something exhibited humanity, it meant something. But what does that mean now?

Humanity seems to be lost in a black hole of disinformation, at least for trump supporters who still stand behind this  convicted felon, pathological liar, demented  orange lunatic.

Think about it. Trump has alienated our allies, other countries and governments view him as a dangerous buffoon, he is decimating D.C.with his  arches, ballrooms and other tributes to himself- like the Kennedy Center etc. The guy is so terrified that history will view him as a loser asshole that he lusts to keep his name everywhere.

Meanwhile, back here in the real world, I intend to get gas tomorrow before the price soars past 5 bucks a gallon – diesel already past 6 bucks a gallon – and to pick up a few things at the grocery store before ordinary stuff reaches unsustainable prices. In other words, trump’s 2nd term is a disaster and if the dems don’t take back both the house and the senate in the midterms, we are totally fucked as a democracy.

Humanity? That word doesn’t  exist in terms of this admin.  For trump, the humanity is about making as much $ as possible for himself and his family. & getting to serve a third term so he can be dictator/king until he dies, and please, please, may that be soon! & please, again, may the dems take back the house and the senate in the midterms.

Daily…

I used to think the trump horror show was daily. But now it just looks like an impersonator: a new, twisted version of an old lie.

Whether it’s ICE or what he intends to do with the ballroom or renaming of lakes, states, oceans, the moon, the man is clearly nuts. He’s not just  old or demented or suffering  from Azheimer’s. He’s CRAZY, LOCO, consumed by  narcissism, ego, a complete breakdown of human personality.

In short, he isn’t fit to be president or to be in any government job. He needs to walk out with the zillions he and his family have made during his 2nd term and move in with one of his kids and drive them nuttier than they already are.

I keep dreading the Mercury retro in Scorpio that runs from Oct 24- Nov 13. In other words, it happen during the Mercury retro in Scorpio , trump’s 3 rd house of communication.In the election of 2000, Mercury retro handed us Bush, not Gore. But trump, a Gemini ruled by Mercury, hasn’t done to well during Merc retros since he won this 2nd term.

So maybe this one will be awful for him – LOSER! – and great for the rest of us!

Love it!

This summer, we’ve had an invasion of ants – not roaches but armies of tiny ants that appear wherever food has been dropped.  Okay, yes, this is Florida where its hot and insects of all kinds thrive. But in the decades I’ve lived in South Florida, I’ve never seen an incursion of ants like we’ve had recently.

Since we got the puppy, Jupiter, I now feed the 4 cats in my office, on elevated dishes that I bought because of the ants. I did some research and I suspect these are ghost ants, which are tiny, practically  invisible and are found on kitchen counters, floors, wherever food has dropped.

I got so tired of being the ant terminator, that I called my buddy Arlene and asked if she knew of a good exterminator. She immediately  told me about Neil and sent me his number.  TEXT HIM. So I did.He assured me that what he uses is safe for cats and dogs.

He arrived today with his nephew. As soon as Neil started talking about ants, I liked the man. Within the first few minutes he was in the house, I mentioned trump’s name in a disparaging way and he called out, “I hate that man!”

What followed among the three of us – Neil, Rob, me- was an exchange of stories of our experiences of the trumpies in our lives. A discussion of what the man was doing and already had done to our country, to democracy, followed. We expressed our mutual hopes for the midterms but agreed that even if the dems takes back the house and senate, trump will still have two more years in office.

Unless he dies.

Or walks away to enjoy his billions with his little blonde Natalie Harp.

Since he and his nephew sprayed, there has been a noticeable absence of ANTS. The cost? A whole lot less than Terminex or some of the larger corporations that do this. Just $35. You never know when you’ll encounter an allly!

Daily Craziness

Think about it. If Biden or Obama had acted daily as trump does, the repugs would have ridiculed and screamed and shouted about it. When trump does it, we get a deafening silence for the most part.

Just Google: what crazy stuff did trump do today – and fill in the date. The risk, of course, is that what you find may make YOU nuts just reading it. The man is so obviously demented, out of his mind, that my hope is that he decides to just leave the presidency and walk away. & why not? He has made billions for himself  and his kids, the supremes have given him the freedom to do pretty much whatever he wants and get away with it.

Personally, I think he senses he’s going to pass on soon &  that’s why he’s so obsessed with having his name on everything – and destroying the norms of democracy and what’s decent.  Well, if that’s the case, I wish he’d hurry up and pass on so we the people can start piecing this country and democracy back together.

Down the Rabbit’s Hole

I’m bewildered by humanity these days, but especially about women. The other night, Rachel Maddow did a story on Moms for Liberty, a right wing group of women who oversaw the Sarasota school board for several years. They banned books and ruled about all the favorite right wing stuff like LBGQTs in sports, the way bathrooms were used etc. etc. By now,that drill is familiar to many of us.

They lost two of their seats to Democratic women in the primaries.

But who are these women? How were they so effectively brainwashed? How far down the rabbit hole did they fall, anyway?

I look at women who still support trump, talk to them, and I still don’t get it. What’s there to believe in? What has the orange monster done for improving your life? That of your kids? Your family? Nothing. Zero.Why have our expenses soared during this administration? Why are we now in what looks like another forever war?

So someone, please, explain it to me.

I asked a new AI about this and it came down to identity politics. I think it means that these women identify with a particular tribe. Great. But the question remains: WHY? Is it like a Jim Jones cult?

Today, it’s two months until the midterm elections. Best to vote in person this year since mail-in voting is in jeopardy.  And if trump can’t control the post office, then he’ll probably declare a national emergency and cancel the election. And who’s going to stop him? The supreme court? The spineless republicans in congress? Ha.

If you get a chance, check out a substack called Caracas Chronicles. The author details what has happened to the country since the admin had dictator Maduro extracted. The Maduro regime is still in power because his VP, Delcy Rodriguez, is cozying up to trump, who is laying claim – or trying to – the country’s billions of barrels of oil. So it goes…

Reedsy…

No, it’s not a new kind of crispy cracker or a movie you should see or a book you should read. Reedsy is s a British ghostwriting site.

I joined after Al Zuckerman, my agent of 25 years, retired at the beginning of Covid. I’d done ghostwriting before, but not in this way. People with ideas or manuscripts come to Reedsy requesting  professional help. Some of the ideas are…well, not great, but some are terrific. As are the people seeking help.

The main thing for me is that the idea appeals to me, speaks to me in some way. Sci-fi with a vision rather than a zillion books in a series that Netflix or someone will love. The paranormal presented as the mystery and mind-blower that it often is. Stories about people getting through the twists and turns that life hurls their way. In other words, I gravitate toward stories that challenge me and my skill as a writer. I like the strange, the weird,but give me a taste of the characters who experience it.

The writer evaluates the idea or manuscript  and makes a financial offer.I base my offers on the difficulty of writing the story and the time I think it will take. One thing I’ve discovered is that writing is sometimes undervalued. My husband, Rob, who also writes for Reedsy, and I have a standing joke: please, just 5 dollars!

Many of the requests I receive involve sci-fi of 80K words or more. An 80,000 word book is roughly 320 pages,  double-spaced. Quite a few people use AI and I can usually tell.  A common AI thing is to state what something IS NOT, then state what it is. Like in  this example: He knew is wasn’t an illusion. He knew it wasn’t an opinion. It was a truth.

Yes, writers may use this technique on their own, but I usually figure it’s AI because it’s so common.

So if you’re a writer with novels or non-fictions books to your credit, and have lost your agent or would like to tap into some extra income, give Reedsy a try. For one thing, the people you meet & work with are often from different cultures and countries & have valuable perspectives. And some of these people, both foreign and domestic, often become friends.
