When the Frogs Come Out

Our winter this year was practically nonexistent and it looks as if we’re skipping spring altogether and heading  right into summer.  For most of April, our temperatures have been in the high 80s or low 90s during the day. Right now, as I write this on April 27, at 10:30 p.m., the thermometer on our porch reads 82 degrees.

These temps bring the Cuban tree frogs out in full force. At night, they show up on our office windows because the light attracts insects and the insects are tasty dinner morsels for frogs. This evening, there were two on my window and two on Rob’s. His second frog hopped away before I snapped a photo.

Considering that frogs have been my totem animal for years, their appearance on our office windows is a synchronicity. We actually collect frogs and have dozens around the house. And over the years, real frogs have occasionally turned up inside the house temporarily joining the collection. When one does get inside, we catch it and usher it out the door before one of the cats turns it into a catch of the day. Whenever they have appeared inside the house, I take note because good luck usually follows, especially if the frog is healthy.

Sometimes, the appearance of frogs on our office windows also portends luck that often reflects how many frogs appear on our window. One frog, one surprise. Two frogs, two surprises, like that. So when I saw two frogs on my window tonight, I hurried into Rob’s office to do a frog count.

Both of us have fake frogs on the inside of our windows. Mine is a colorful metal sculpture, his is this cute frog with a funny expression that is stuck to the glass. When I saw the frog on his window, I burst out laughing. A real frog was staring up at the fake guy as though it were a god.

“It looks like the frog is paying homage to its god above, look at him. His throat is fluttering, like he’s praying to his frog god.”

So I snapped some photos and Rob got his copy up on Facebook before I’d finished this blog post. Oh well. The quickest frog gets the insect!

I love frogs. How sweet that they hang out on your windows!

  4. Never seen frogs in an abundance. The book on the top of a (big) pile in my office is something called Stepping Into The Magic. I picked it up because I know the author has listed what she calls power animals. The book had a piece of paper inside as a bookmark – and on that page the frog is listed! She writes:

“Need to cleanse or refresh yourself; clear any negativity from your environment; perhaps you need a short retreat before ‘taking the plunge'”

For some reason I also opened up the second book in the pile and, unbelievably, between the pages was a white feather!

So I’m wondering if the frog message was partly for me.

P.S. Huh! You don’t have to rub it in about all of that sunshine! 🙂
