Brooklyn Ghost Story

Over the past couple of years, our long-time friend Melissa, aka Queenie Bee, has mentioned disturbances in the apartment she shares with husband, Jon. From time to time, she senses another presence and so does her cat whose fur on her back rises up. Was it her imagination. Old buildings are known for making creaking sounds, after all.

But Melissa’s latest encounter seems to suggest something more from the ghosty realm. Here it is.

“Latest installment in our ghost story — last night at about 2:00 AM I went downstairs to sleep on the couch. Jon’s snoring had woken me up and I couldn’t get back to sleep.  It wasn’t long though before I was feeling that someone or something was here with me.  And Geisha ran over to the kitchen table acting like something was over there.

“She dealt with that and then came over and protected me. She was in a guarding stance and then finally snuggled in and went to sleep. This morning, Jon woke up and immediately told me he had a nightmare and I started laughing hysterically for no reason.

“In his dream ,he saw a dead lady sitting at our kitchen table in the same spot Geisha ran to and where I had felt some other presence. His description of what she looked like did not please me. I think that is weird!

“I thought my imagination was going off on a tangent since I had watched a scary movie earlier in the evening. But then Jon told me his dream. I can tell you for sure it is not Nana or my friend Sarah or anyone I know…unless they are supremely pissed in the afterlife! I told the ghost this morning that we are cool with her presence as long as she is nice.”

So Jon’s dream–as well as Geisha’s reaction–provided Melissa with a sense of verification of her experience. No doubt we’ll hear more. I say that because of Melissa’s actions to welcome the ghost. My preference would be taking action to send the lost being–if that’s what she’s dealing with–on its way into the other world. Doing so is not necessarily done out of fear, but out of compassion.

Because I have a number of AIRBNB guests on my property, I regularly work with a medium, Cate, who comes to clear the property of energy debris, and spirits that apparently sometimes travel with guests. Every time you can very much feel the difference in feeling tone and energy. Cate says that she crosses over spirits that are stuck here for various reasons all the time – in fact, she wrote a book (which I illustrated) called “Just Cross Them Over”! I don’t exactly understand what she means by “crossing over” as I am not a medium, but she says that she prays and opens a portal for them – she says that we’re not meant to stick around and bother the living, that we are meant to go Home.

It would be a compassionate thing to do if you could find a way to communicate with her directly. Ghosts are earthbound spirits. Everyone has guides and teachers. Melissa could ask her own guardians to communicate with this lady. Sometimes they just get lost and confused. That could have happened with my mother. She had dementia and she thought she was in her childhood home. Her family on the other side couldn’t reach her.

I’ll pass this on to her!

I sometimes feel that these earthbound spirits are themselves haunted. A wonderful Santa Fe story about sending one of these lost souls back home has been written up in AMERICAN GHOST by Hannah Nordhaus. Her great grandmother haunted La Posada, a high end hotel that used to be the family home.

I found Jon’s dream the most validating and interesting part of this story. Fascinating!
