Magna Carta Revisited

In The 7 Secrets of Synchronicity, the 7th secret is called the Global: When synchronicities manifest themselves through global events, the universe seems to be addressing us as a collective. Typically, they take place in the public arena for all to see. That was the case when a pod of dolphins unexpectedly surfaced near wreaths dropped from a helicopter in a memorial service for the seven astronauts who died in the 1986 Challenger disaster. Their spontaneous appearance a the the dramatic ceremony was seen as inspiring and reassuring, symbolic of a larger picture. Greek legends treat the dolphin as a creature of good fortune and intelligence, a talisman for voyages not only on the sea but also into the afterlife.

Now a new global synchronicity has manifested at a time when the president of the United States, who the Supreme Court has ruled as protected from prosecution for his actions as president, is often seen as acting more like a king than the president of a democracy. His plans for a costly military parade in Washington on his birthday is but one small example. Ignoring due process of accused gang members and shipping them to a foreign prison is another.

He has also taken numerous executive actions, including an attempt to control private colleges which he feels are acting in defiance of his wishes. The most notable of those is Harvard University, which has refused the executive orders to turn over control of the university’s directorship and allow the federal government to decide what classes can be taught at Harvard. As a result of the refusal, the university has lost hundreds of millions of dollars in federal assistance.

Here’s the related global synchronicity. After World War II, Harvard purchased a copy of the Magna Carta in an auction for $27. A very good deal, it turns out. Experts have declared that copy is one of seven remaining original copies of the document and is worth millions of dollars. Why is that a synchronicity?

The Magna Carta is a historic document signed by King John of England in 1215 that limited the power of the monarch, established the principle that everyone, including the king, is subject to the law, and guaranteed fundamental rights like the right to justice and a fair trial. The sudden appearance of the highly regarded document in the news brings attention to these rights at a time when many Americans feel that the country’s democracy is under siege and it’s future uncertain.
