The Mystical Underground: Meditation…Naturally

A new episode of The Mystical Underground is live! “Meditation…Naturally”:

Join Trish and Rob’s conversation with…

Josh Lane, author of Conscious Nature: The Art and Neuroscience of Meditating in Nature, a book that ties the healing power of nature with mindfulness and meditation, and also cutting edge neuroscience.

Josh’s journey started with a fascination with nature as a youth that led to college studies that focused on the realm of our connection with nature and related mentoring on the subject. That led him to a decade long apprenticeship in wilderness tracking and studying the ancient arts of reading nature’s language. He has also explored a variety of meditative paths, including shamanism, Hermetic Qabala, and Qi Gong systems.

I should also add that when Josh first contacted me last year he told me that he had recently re-read my Indiana Jones novels, and wondered how much of his own journey had been inspired by the esoteric topics that I had embedded in those books. I think it was on reading the last of those novels, Indiana Jones and the Interior World, that went into some of the philosophy of the Kogi Indians of the Sierra Nevada of Santa Marta Mountains of Colombia that you had a synchronicity and decided to contact me.

Isabella Dove and her daughter, Naa’lia

We first “met” Isabella Dove around the time we started our blog in February 2009. She lived in Thailand with her young daughter, Naa’ila. Back then, she was teaching yoga and she and Naa’ila moved around southeast Asia as new yoga gigs surfaced.

I was always impressed by their relationship – mom and daughter, a nomadic duo.
But in October 2014, Isabella  lost her eleven-year-old daughter while they were living in West Africa. I still remember the night I came across Isabella’s post about Naa’ila’s death. I cried.

In 2015, Isabella sent us a string of synchronicities related to Naa’ila that appeared to be spirit communication. She considered them to be deeply healing. We included some of them in Secrets of Spirit Communication.

Hello Trish, this is the story.

Or one of the stories. There have been others but this one I feel has a huge meaning.
My daughter passed away on the 23rd of October 2014. She was 11 years, 9 months and 9 days old. The day she died was the Diwali Festival, as they call it in India, the Festival of Lights. It’s a day when many people apparently wish they could pass away because the Festival of Lights represents the ultimate liberation from life’s burdens. It occurs every year around the end of October.

I was told that  in India some people who are on their way to other side, actually try to wait to pass away on that day. So when I was in India, people were telling me in how lucky she and I were that she passed on the day she did. She was freed from burden and went straight to the light and this has invaluable significance for my own karma.

We lived in Laos for 4 years so I organized a Theravada Buddhist ceremony at the main temple in Vientiane and decided to put her ashes in the wall of the temple, as per practice. So a plaque was needed.  The best way was for me was to keep it simple, creative and not too expensive. So I took the picture of her that I love with the writing on it (image above) went to a printing shop, and had it made on an acrylic support which would be covered with glass and sealed. Three more copies were made  as I wanted to keep one for me and I also sent one to my brother.

The post in Laos is reliable, yet you can never guarantee what happens. Anyhow, it cost me four times the price of the four acrylic 4 plaques to send them to Europe.  This was done around January 20, 2015. Since I couldn’t find any bubble protected envelope, I put the plaques in a simple envelope and thought I would be lucky if the package arrived at its destination in one piece.

I never really bothered to check but after about a month, my brother told me the package hadn’t arrived yet. Then, on March 10, 2015, he was writing me a happy birthday email and announced the package had arrived that very day, on my birthday. Like a present.
So my lovely daughter’s presence was in both places at the same in Europe with my brother and with me in Thailand, wishing me a happy birthday!

I have other stories like this in my notebook. I also wrote a few posts on my blog. I am slowly getting my normal life back, but it will never really be normal again.

Lot of love,
Isabella

And now Isabella’s memoir about her journey with Naa’ila through physical life and beyond, has been published.  Everything Is Fine, Mama: The Way of the Mango Girl is a beautiful story that tells us as much about Isabella as it does about her special daughter, Naa’ila.

As a parent, I can’t imagine anything worse than losing my daughter. But Isabella not only survived it, Naa’ila’s death became became the fulcrum for her spiritual growth.

Welcome to Hurricane Season

This evening, Rob was reading something online and said, “Hey, there’re going to be as many as 25 hurricane this season. How do we evacuate during COVID?”

Me: You don’t.

Rob: You’d want to stay here?

Me: Huh?

This is like asking what you would do if everything went off the grid tomorrow and never came back. You don’t know what you would do until it happens. You can speculate all you want, but the bottom line is that you don’t know.

We considered evacuating before Irma in September 2017. But just getting out of the state with millions of other people, on I-95, I-75 and the Florida turnpike, felt like insanity, and in the end, we stayed behind. Our friends Arlene and Neal evacuated, 18 hours to get to some small town in southern Georgia, a trip that usually takes about eight to nine hours on a good day.

That was the largest evacuation in Florida history.

Whether you evacuate or not depends on the strength of the storm, where and when it’s forecast to make landfall, what category the hurricane is, how long it will take you to get to somewhere that’s safe, all the minutia. It also depends on what your personal situation is.

If you have young or sick children, elderly parents, pets that can or can’t make the trip, or if  you live to the beach… all the personal minutia, too, that sculpts your decision.

So if we have some cat 5 hurricane aimed at South Florida this season, have some sort of plan. Pay attention to the synchronicities, those early warning signs. And whether your plan is to you stay or leave, understand this is all part of what our futures with climate change may look like.

The Soul of America

In recent days, I’ve found myself wondering if the soul of America is corrupt. And then I run across a story that embodies the best of the American soul and it restores my hope. There’s also a synchronicity involved in this. The story is from CNN.

“When Antonio Gwynn Jr. saw the damage from protests in his hometown of Buffalo, New York, he grabbed a broom, bought some trash bags and started cleaning the streets by himself.

“He started at 2 a.m. on Monday and did not stop cleaning for the next 10 hours. When an organized group of neighbors arrived later that morning to start clearing the damage, they found that Gwynn had already done most of the work.

Gwynn is an 18-year-old high school senior. He told CNN that he saw on the local news that Bailey Avenue in Buffalo was covered in glass and garbage, and he knew people needed to use that street to get to work in the morning.

“When word spread of how Gwynn single-handedly took action, his community responded.”

Here’s what happened. Matt Block, 27,  saw Gwynn’s story on the news and and saw that Gwynn had asked for car buying advice on Facebook, and decided to give him his 2004 red Mustang convertible. And here’s the synchronicity: Gwynne’s mom, who had passed in 2018, also drove a red Mustang. Gwynn was so shocked at the coincidence he “didn’t have words” and Block says it “gave him goosebumps.” That’s the impact  powerful synchros often have, a physical, visceral reaction.

But the story doesn’t stop there.

A local businessman, Bob Briceland, heard about Block’s gift. So he offered Gwynn a year of free auto insurance coverage through his insurance agency. “I just felt compelled to help him out. We just need to get together our whole city and show people how there’s so many good people here,” Briceland told CNN’s affiliate WKBW.

“After high school, Gwynn had planned to go to trade school while saving up to go to college. Upon hearing Gwynn’s story, Medaille College in Buffalo offered him a full scholarship where he plans to study business in the fall.”

Think about this. A kid  single-handedly sweeps and cleans up a street trashed during the protests because the people in his town need to use the road to get to work the next morning. He sweeps and cleans for TEN hours. And people in his community step up to show their appreciation – the red Mustang, the year’s worth of insurance, and a full college scholarship. And in the middle of all this is the powerful synchronicity concerning the red Mustang.

Whatever the source of synchronicity – god, the universe, quantum physics, the law of attraction or something else- this one holds a hopeful message for all of us. Perhaps we really can emerge on the other side of all this as a kinder, more equitable and just society.

Lunar Eclipse in Sagittarius Today

Today at 3:12 PM EDT, there’s a lunar eclipse at 15 degrees Sagittarius. This eclipse is the first of three between now and early July. June 21 features a solar eclipse at 0 degrees Cancer and on July 5, there’s a lunar eclipse in Capricorn at 12:44 a.m. EDT.

News of one kind or another usually accompanies eclipses. But lunar eclipses are more about internal events and solar eclipses concern outer events. Because it’s in Sagittarius, a mutable fire sign that always seeks the bigger picture, we’ll all be looking for the emotional big picture. In terms of national events, that bigger picture may encompass the murder of George Floyd. In terms of our personal world, it may concern something we learned during the lock down part of the pandemic about ourselves.

Mars in Pisces forms an exact square with the eclipse degree, which may spark tempers, arguments, aggression of some kind. The forecast for June is here. Check your particular sign for how the eclipse impacts you.

Exploiting Big Foot

Have you seen that Progressive Insurance ad in which Flo, the iconic comedic insurance salesperson, has a conversation with Big Foot? Poor, Big Foot, getting exploited for commercial use. But they are not exactly speaking up in opposition. Though Flo better stay out of the woods!

When I saw that ad the other day, it reminded me of my one encounter with Big Foot (aka Yeti, Abominable Snowman, Sasquatch). That was many years ago in the North Woods of Minnesota, a large region in the northeastern part of the state known as Arrowhead Country or the Boundary Waters Canoe Area (BWCA). No motorized vehicles are allowed and transportation is by canoe and portages…trails connecting the numerous lakes. I still recall portaging my canoe on my back resting the padded cross-bar on my shoulders and carrying a Duluth pack with my camping gear on trips I used to take, usually one around Memorial Day weekend, the Fourth of July or Labor Day. Sometimes, all three.

On one particular trip, a friend and I paddled across a lake to a campsite at sunset. It was the only campsite on that lake. We had the place to ourselves. After pulling the canoe up to shore, I followed a trail leading from the campsite to a big wooden box, the outdoor toilet supplied by the park service. No outhouse, just a box above a hole in the ground, in the forest.

As I approached it, I stopped as I saw a figure moving through the woods about fifty feet away. I glanced down for just a moment, feeling a bit disappointed that someone else was here. As I looked up, the figure raced through the thick woods at an incredible speed on two feet. It wasn’t human, wasn’t a bear. Within moments, it was gone.

When I told my friend what I saw, he was intrigued at first. But then he thought otherwise when I told him exactly what I saw. The creature appeared to be wearing something white on its head that I described as a sailor hat with the brim pulled down. My friend, Laurel, just shook his head. He believed there might be Yeti in the forest, but not one wearing a sailor hat.

A few years later, I read a description of a Bigfoot sighting that included an illustration. The creature had a conical head, and the top half of it was white, suggesting that it was an older Sasquatch.

I’ve never seen the Florida version of the Sasquatch, but others have, and they’ve even written a book about their encounters and theories. It all began in 2012 when authors and radio personalities Jeffrey Pritchett and Andrew B. Colvin invited a number of Bigfoot researchers onto their radio show, The Church of Mabus, and began an investigation into the Bigfoot phenomenon. The result is a fascinating book by Colvin and Pritchett called, Praise for the Hairy Man: The Secret Life of Bigfoot.

The authors, both of whom have had Bigfoot sightings and experiences, used a simple 10-question interview format and delved into a diversity of areas about this elusive creature. The areas include: the Bigfoot/alien connection, the possible role of ancient aliens in the genetic history of the Yeti, the sex habits of Sasquatch, reports of telepathy, shapeshifting and flight with Bigfoot, Native American beliefs in Sasquatch.

One of the chapters that intrigued me was an interview with Stacy Brown Jr., whose team is called the Sasquatch Hunters of Florida. There are 12 members on his team who come from a variety of backgrounds but are united in their passion to find out the truth about Sasquatch. I guess they didn’t want to use the more common name for the Florida version of the creature, which is skunk ape.

Brown recounted one of his own experiences. In November 2011, he and another man, Matt Roberts, pitched a tent on a property and were in “for one scary night. The creatures walked around our camp all night. We had hickory nuts thrown at us. At one point, we woke up to our tent shaking. We got a thermal image that night and some really good audio. Needless to say, I was ‘sold.’ I quit the band I was in, and went into Bigfoot full-throttle.”

When Brown was asked if Sasquatch might be a paranormal or multidimensional creature, he replied that anything is possible. “Any time you go that route, though, people think you are nuts. It’s just too much for their minds to grasp.” During his experiences that night in November, he thought the creatures might be ghosts because they moved around so effortlessly

I particularly enjoyed the chapters that drew connections between Bigfoot and UFOs. In Chapter 5, the authors interview Stan Gordon, a former Pennsylvania state director for MUFON. He’s also an author and has appeared on numerous TV shows talking about his research. According to Gordon: “There are a small percentage of cases… where observers have seen both a UFO and Bigfoot at the same time and location. From the reports I have received from across the country and around the world, such cases may be much more common than first thought.” The biggest problem, Gordon notes, is that many researchers are reluctant to publish such accounts for fear of ridicule.

Sounds familiar, doesn’t it? Whether it’s Bigfoot, UFOs, aliens, or anything else that goes bump in the night, fear of ridicule seems to be a huge impediment to finding the truth.

A Paradigm Shift?

Are we witnesses to the birth of a new paradigm? One in which all people are equal? Where there’s not such a disparity between Rich and poor? White and black? Where no college student has to take on debt so enormous that they’ll never be able to buy a place to live?

In this time of instant photos, instant video, instant everything, a Smart Phone video taken by a 17-year-old girl, may be key.

The video of George Floyd’s death clearly shows now fired cop Derek Chauvin pressing his knee against Floyd’s neck until it killed him. When I first saw the video, several things shocked me: the way Chauvin kept his hand in his pocket, sort of casual, the way he looked at the videographer- the directness of his gaze – and that I was watching a white cop kill an unarmed black man while three other cops stood nearby, watching.

During the news tour tonight of various cities where protesters were out I recognized Lafayette Park. In 1970, I was there for a huge protest against the war in Vietnam. We slept in that park. I remember someone handing out tubes of Vaseline and advising us to smear it all over our faces to protect ourselves against tear gas. I remember being really uncomfortable sleeping on the ground and worrying that we might be gassed during the night. I also remember thinking that Vaseline wouldn’t work since I’d have to rub it in my eyes and inside my nose and mouth to be protected.

Interestingly, Rob was also at that protest but got to sleep in a real bed that night above a bookstore where some protesters had gathered. Our paths didn’t cross.
Protest is our first amendment right. We protest against situations — war, inequality, discrimination, a rigged system, sanctions against and invasions of foreign countries. The idea with democracy is founded on certain rights and many of them have been trashed during this administration.

It’s not as if the murder of George Floyd by a white cop is anything new. But because a Smart Phone captured it on video, because that video went viral, this murder is different. This moment is different. In his final moments, we hear George Floyd calling out to his dead mom.

When Rob and I heard that, we looked at each other and Rob vocalized my thought: He called out to his mom because she was there, ready to accompany him into the afterlife. And now the tragic death of George Floyd has triggered a massive movement for systemic change.
