Predicting the Coming of Trump

William H. Gass, 1969

“Consider how the titles of tyrants change,” the historian William Frederick Kohler once wrote. “We shall suffer no more Emperors, Kings, Czars, Shahs or Caesars, to lop off our limbs and burn our homes, kiddo, defile our women and bugger our boys; the masses make such appointments now; the masses love tyranny; they demand it; they dance to it; they feel that their hand is forming the First Citizen’s Fist; so we shall murder more modestly in future: beneath the banners of ‘Il Duce,’ ‘Der Führer,’ the General Secretary or the Party Chairman, the C.E.O. of something. I suspect that the first dictator of this country will be called Coach.”

—From “The Tunnel,” a 1995 novel by William H. Gass in which he predicted the likes of the  Trump presidency.

Gass died at age 93 in 2017, living just long enough to see his character’s prediction come about in a country in which nearly half of the population believe freedom means following a crazed would-be tyrant down a path of rancor, racism, lies and twisted conspiracies. Gass began the novel in the late ‘60s and finished it a quarter of a century later, getting it published by Knopf. The Times Book Review critic at the time was puzzled by the dire vision of America and wrote: “It will be years before we know what to make of it.”

He was right about that.

Gass was an uncompromising pessimist. “I wrote ‘The Tunnel’ out of the conviction that no race or nation is better than any other, and that no nation or race is worse; that the evil men do every day far outweighs the good.”

In the novel, the deeply depressed historian Kohler, who has just completed a book about Hitler, begins to dig a tunnel to nowhere in his basement. That’s the source of the title.

The Times Book Review dug up the old novel, and gave it a fresh review July 12, 2019. Critic Alec Nevala-Lee noted that “…this evocative symbol [the tunnel] occupies only a fraction of the narrative, which is dominated by Kohler’s seemingly endless flood of rage, interspersed with typographical tricks, cartoons and obscene limericks.

A flood of rage. An interesting phrase considering the following from the first page of Bob Woodward’s new book, RAGE: “I bring rage out. I do bring rage out. I always have. I don’t know if that’s an asset or a liability, but whatever it is, I do.” – Presidential candidate Donald J. Trump , March 31, 2016.

Now with the election days away it’s time for us to crawl out of our own tunnel and enter a new era, and put this one away forever.

OCTOBER ASTRO FORECAST

AND THE WRITTEN VERSION

Whether you’re still working remotely or are back at work in your office, October should be an interesting month – two full moons and some other changes to watch for.

On October 1, the month gets off to a nice start with a full moon in Aries – the Harvest Moon. It’s friendly, impatient, pushes ahead, is impulsive, entrepreneurial.

On October 2, lovely Venus enters perfectionist Virgo, where it remains for the next month. Your focus for those weeks may be on money, communication, your creativity. And please, don’t criticize yourself.

After a lengthy slumber, Pluto turns direct in Capricorn on October 4.

October 7 brings Mercury in Scorpio opposes Uranus in Taurus, the first of three oppositions over the next five weeks. This one can either drive you half nuts with anxiety or results in some original and innovative ideas.

October 13- Mercury turns retrograde in Libra and doesn’t turn direct again until election day, Nov. 3. This is exactly what happened on the election in 2000 and that election ended up in the supreme court. So, brace yourself for chaos and complete bedlam on November 3. Don’t sign contracts during this retro or buy appliances, computers, cars or anything else with moving parts. Double check appointments. Express yourself clearly, leaving no room for misunderstandings. Revise, review, reconsider.

The new moon in Libra on October 16 brings in new opportunities with social media, friends,  art. But thanks to Mercury’s retrograde, things may be slow in manifesting themselves.

Circle the 19th. Venus in Virgo and Jupiter, now back in Capricorn, trine each other, perfect aspects for luck, love, and money.

And on Halloween, October 31, we have the second full moon of the month, in Taurus. And because it’s the second one, it’s called a Blue Moon. That same day, we have a sun/Uranus opposition, so be alert for something unexpected that may show up.

ARIES

The full moon in Aries on October 1 may signal the culmination or completion of something you’ve been working on – a fitness routine, a creative project, some element of yourself you’re seeking to transform. When a full or new moon occurs in your sign, synchronicities abound, so pay attention to the messages. Also, Mars retrograde in Aries trines Venus in fellow fire sign Leo, adding spice and passion to your love life and creativity.

The October 7 opposition between Mercury in Scorpio and your 8th house and Uranus in Taurus in your 2nd, impacts your income and your partner’s income. It brings unexpected news and surprises, but may also increase your general anxiety.

On October 13, Mercury turns retrograde in Libra and your 7th house of partnerships. This can lead to misunderstandings with business and personal partners. Be sure to follow the advice provided in the general roundup.

The new moon in Libra on October 16 brings new opportunities in business and personal partnerships. However, it squares Saturn, Pluto and Jupiter in Capricorn, in the career and profession area. Those squares can create conflicts with a boss, partner, or co-worker. But this new moon makes you more diplomatic and willing to talk things through.

In spite of Mercury’s retrograde, the Halloween Blue Moon in Taurus brings in new financial opportunities. Think before you act.

TAURUS

The Aries full moon on October 1, takes place in your 12th house. So this one illuminates your personal unconscious or something you’re doing in solitude. You may be winding up a project and are ready for the next cool thing. An added bonus is that Mars retrograde in Aries is trine to Venus in Leo in your 4th house. Even with the retro, it’s ideal for a romantic evening at home.

On the 13th, trickster Mercury turns retrograde in Libra (until November 3) in your 6th house, health and work. The best advice for this period is to revise, review, reconsider. If it involves a choice about whether to keep working from home or returning to your workplace, it’s likely you’ll change your mind.

The new moon in Libra on October 16 falls in the same house as the Mercury retrograde. So, new work opportunities may be slower in coming, but they will arrive. Be on the lookout for synchronicities that point the way forward. Three days later, on the 19th, Venus and Jupiter trine each other in Virgo and Capricorn. This could indicate a new romance or a trip that expands your knowledge and your life.

For good ole spooky Halloween, the second full moon of the month is in your sign. You may decide to don a costume and trick or treat with your kids. Get out and do fun stuff, whatever it is, and be alert for something unexpected to show up.

GEMINI

The new moon in Aries on October 1 occurs in your 11th houses. News arrives concerning a friend or a network to which you belong. This moon illuminates some wish or dream that you have, which the pandemic may have clarified in some way. With Saturn now direct in Capricorn, your 8th house, issues with mortgages and insurance should straighten out.

Venus enters perfectionist Virgo and your 4th house on October 2. Perhaps, during this pandemic, you’ve realized that you prefer working from home. Now Venus in Virgo shows you the way to make your home-based business work. You may also be spiffing up your home in some way – more color, indoor plants, throw rugs, fresh paint. Venus remains in Virgo for a month.

Pluto turns direct in Capricorn on October 4 and now you come into your full power where money and shared resources are concerned.

Since Mercury rules your sign, its retrograde in Libra on October 13 probably isn’t welcome! You undoubtedly already know the guidelines that you should follow to navigate this retrograde, but they’re enumerated in the general roundup.

The new moon in fellow air sign Libra on October 16 brings in new opportunities for you to express your creativity. However, since Mercury is also retrograde in Libra, things may be slow in getting off the ground.

The 19th should be a lucky day for you in terms of home and money, always good news. Venus in Virgo and Jupiter in Capricorn, trine each other.

Then we come to the Blue Moon – the second Full moon of the month – on October 31. It’s in Taurus, your 12th house, and brings news about anything you’ve been dong behind the scenes. The same day, there’s a Sun/Uranus opposition – in Scorpio and Taurus respectively, your 6th and 12th houses. Expect the unexpected.

CANCER

The full moon in Aries on October 1 falls in your professional/career area. This one is known as the Harvest Moon, so there’s some aspect of your professional life that now brings in your harvest. Maybe it’s a raise or a promotion or both. Perhaps you realize that what you’ve been doing professionally no longer suits you and now you have a much clearer idea about the career path you wish to follow.

Venus enters Virgo and your 3rd house on October 2 and since it’s sextile to your sun, this should be beneficial for you in terms of communication and in your relationships with relatives and neighbors. It may also bring in additional income and creative impetus.

Pluto turning direct in Capricorn on October 4, in your 7th house, should be good for your business and personal partnerships. You now have a better grasp of your personal power.

Mercury’s retrograde in Libra runs from October 13 to November 3. It’s in your 4th house of home and family, your personal environment. There may be misunderstandings with family during this period, so be sure to express yourself clearly and follow the guidelines given in the general roundup section.

October 16 brings a beautiful new moon in Libra in your 4th house. Even though Mercury is retrograde in Libra as well, new opportunities should surface in your personal environment, but things may be a bit slow in unfolding.

One of the luckiest days of the year occurs on the 19th. Venus in Virgo and Jupiter in Capricorn trine each other. Just remember: if the luck involves a contract for a service you provide, don’t sign until after Mercury turns direct on November 3.

Halloween features a surprise this year: a Blue Moon, the second full moon of the month, in Taurus. This one falls in your 11th house, so there may be news that brings a wish or dream you have into greater focus.

LEO

October kicks off with a full moon in fellow fire sign Aries, in your 9th house. Some aspect of your worldview and spirituality are illuminated. Since the 9th house also governs higher education and foreign travel, perhaps you’ve decided to go to grad school or law school or are ready to take a dream trip – if the foreign country is allowing travelers from your country.

You’ll like October 2 when Venus enters Virgo and your 2nd house of income. It remains there for a month, so be prepared for a new source of money or an augmented income.
Once Pluto turns direct in Capricorn and your 6th house on October 4, you’re in a power powerful position to call the shots.

Thanks to an opposition between Mercury in Scorpio and Uranus in Taurus on October 7, be ready for an unexpected surprise that involves home and career. Whether the surprise is positive or negative depends on how you deal with it.

Mercury turns retrograde in Libra on October 13 – in your third house of communication. That means it’s even more important that you communicate clearly, particularly with siblings and relatives and neighbors.

On October 16, the new moon in Libra, your 3rd house, brings in opportunities for greater self-expression and communication. Mercury is retrograde in the same sign, so these opportunities may be slow in surfacing.

The 19th is a lucky day because Venus in Virgo, your 2nd house, trines Jupiter in Capricorn, your 6th house. Look for an increase in your income, perhaps through a new source, or because you land a promotion and a raise.

Halloween features the second full moon of the month, a Blue Moon, in Taurus. That same day, we have a sun/Uranus opposition, so unexpected career news may be headed your way.

VIRGO

It’s actually a pretty nice month for you, Virgo! Well, except for the retrograde of your ruler, Mercury. More on that in a minute.

The full moon in Aries on October 4 spotlights the clients who pay you for the service you offer, your landlord or the bank that holds your mortgage, and the harvest is yours. You’re a pioneering spirit on this full moon. Make the most of it.

You’ll love October 2, when Venus enters your sign for a full month. Your love life heats up. Your creativity slams into high gear. Your income may increase, too. This helps to balance Mercury’s retrograde in Libra and your 2nd house of money between October 13 and November 3, when things slow down. Follow the guidance listed in the general overview for navigating this retro successfully.

Pluto turns direct in Capricorn on October 4 in your 5th house and suddenly, you’re a powerhouse of creativity.

When your ruler, Mercury, turns retrograde on October 13 through November 3, follow the guidelines in the general roundup. This retro occurs in Libra, your 2nd house of money, so be sure to stay on top of your finances.

Three days later, on October 16, the new moon in Libra in the same house as the Mercury retrograde should usher in new opportunities for income. The new source of income could be the result of a promotion, a new client, or the sale of a creative project.

LIBRA

Pluto turns direct on October 4, in Capricorn, your 4th house. This puts you in the power seat if you’re launching a home-based business, selling your home – or buying one.

On October 7, Mercury in Scorpio, your 2nd house, opposes Uranus in Taurus, your 8th house. This is the first of three oppositions during the next five weeks. Since it hits your financial axis there may be an unexpected surprise with money. Or you might discover an innovative way to earn additional income.

Between October 13 and November 3, Mercury in your sign will be retrograde. There are ways to navigate this energy so it isn’t as chaotic, so be sure to follow the guidelines in the general roundup section. The magical words are revise, review, reconsider.

The new moon in Libra on the 16th should be bring in opportunities that are personally pleasing. However, the Mercury retro in your sign may slow down their arrival. The Good ‘Ole Illuminati

In the past few months, a person who calls himself/herself ce qui se passe (it means, What’s happening?) periodically makes veiled comments about how we’re all being lied to.

Mystery person:

You have no idea the lies you’ve been told. Not just Trump. Not just Republicans. Not just Democrats. There are no political parties. You are watching a scripted movie. A silent war is happening. Hidden from view by complicit media.Only at the precipice will the people find the will to take their country back. Eyes Wide Shut. Eyes In Darkness. Light Exposes.

So I’m wondering if this mystery person is actually a bot. I try to find an IP address in my counter, but nothing shows up.

On September 8, Mystery Person/bot comments:

All but 3 presidents in the last 70 years were chosen for us, not elected.
Trump happened by accident.
Reagan happened by accident.
JFK happened by accident.
All others chosen for us. Democrat, Republican, doesn’t matter.
There are no political parties. It’s all an illusion [controlled opposition].
You will be shocked when you learn how deep this goes. Shocked.
Who was responsible for election security [ballot box chain of custody] pre-2018 midterms?
Who is responsible for election security now?
What [security protocols] changed?
How are votes counted?
Ballot box chain of custody is key.
Why did it change?
Why is there such a strong push for mail-in voting now?
Loss of control.
Follow the chain.
District–>County–>???–>State–>???–>Nation. Fill in the blanks.
See prior comment re: Snowden. Important.

And on September 4, this:

Snowden knows what’s coming. He’s part of it. Your friends might know too.
People you’ve been taught to trust have been lying to you for a very very long time.

At some point, Rob suggested sending the comments straight to spam. But I’m curious.

Me: So when are you going to reveal this big secret?

I eventually said that the free press was all that stood between us and autocracy.

The response:

The press is not free.
You are not free.
Democracy is an illusion.
Senators (many) [owned]
Representatives (many) [owned]
Presidents (all but 3) [owned]
Top levels of bureaucracy [owned]
Media (there are only 6) [owned]
Big Tech [owned]
By whom? How? Dig.

I responded: Maybe you’re owned, too. Dig!

Mystery person:
I am. You are too. Sometimes the truth must be shown, not told. You are watching a scripted movie.

Me: Who’s directing this movie?

The answer: Follow the money.

Me: I don’t have time to follow the $. If you’ve got secret info, let everyone else in on it. Your veiled references are tedious.

So is Mystery Person a bot? Some wacko from QAnon? A person crazed by lockdown and masks with a lot of time on his/her hands? A government wannabe whistleblower? Some lonely person in a basement somewhere? A wannabe troublemaker? What’s the point of veiled references to some vast conspiracy that’s manipulating everything?

Why should I pay attention to your particular conspiracy – whatever it is – when there are other conspiracies that are spelled out and multiplying daily? Or when the larger conspiracy of the trump administration is right in front of me? You know, the one called the pandemic is over, it’s safe to open up schools, tattoo parlors, bars, restaurants, movie theaters and every other facet of normal life pre-covid.

It’s the one where legendary Bob Woodward recorded 18 interviews with trump and we learned that on February 7, trump talked about the virus with Woodward. He knew it was deadly, a respiratory virus, but that he wanted to play it down. And he did. Three weeks later, on February 28, he called the virus a hoax and everything he has said and done since has led to a health crisis that is now politicized.

So Mr. or Mrs. What’s Happening, my advice is to create your own blog and post your veiled references that never reveal anything, and let your followers find you. Call it The Illuminati.

The Lure of Cedar Key During a Pandemic – and #137

The island of Cedar Key lies about 50 miles southwest of Gainesville, Florida, in the Gulf of Mexico. There’s one road in and out – highway 24 – and during the height of the pandemic, that road was blocked. Outsiders weren’t allowed in. The year-round residents – about 700 of them – were permitted to leave so they could grocery shop, but to get back in, had to show proof that they owned a home on the island. As a result, the island has only 8 COVID cases. So we decided it would be an ideal spot to celebrate our daughter’s 31st birthday.

Cedar Key is about the same size as Tango Key, my fictional island 12 miles west of Key West. Dock Street is the main area, with several waterfront bars and restaurants from which pods of dolphins are often sighted. You see signs like this one:

Below is our favorite spot for incredible breakfasts, owned by a couple from Atlanta. They feed 8 stray cats, so if you’re sitting outside, at least one of them will venture over for handouts. The owners wore masks and asked customers entering the shop to do so as well. Mask-wearing around the island was about 50/50.

Here’s another spot, The Tipsy Cow

The big draw, of course, is the water – fishing, kayaking, canoeing, and pontoon boats. That’s the one we rented. Dogs allowed! And Nigel and Nika loved it and went swimming to stay cool.

The house we rented was on a salt marsh, dog friendly, and large enough to accommodate Megan’s friends, some of whom stayed several nights, and others who came just for the day. It had a jukebox!

And a fantastic porch that overlooked a salt marsh…

and faced west, which meant glorious sunsets

Cedar Key was the first place – except Orlando – that we’ve been since the pandemic began in March.  It was almost like life before COVID, a much needed change of pace and scenery where synchronicities flourished. Mine involved the number 137, which haunted Nobel prize winner Wolfgang Pauli for much of his life. The synchro fit. #137 has been described as “the DNA of light.”

NEW MOON IN VIRGO

Every new moon should be a celebration. It opens a new chapter in our lives  filled with new opportunities, people, experiences. But not all new moon are equated equal. This one, about 6 weeks before the election on November 3, has some good points – and some that may be challenging.

It’s at 25  degrees Virgo, so generally there should be new opportunities in the maintenance of your daily health and in the way you communicate. But the new moon is widely opposed by Neptune in Pisces, which often suggests confusion, not having all the information you need,  outright deception.  The new moon forms a beautiful angle to Saturn – an exact trine – and a close trine to Pluto and a wider trine to Jupiter, 3rd house.  Luck, power, structure. You’re able to turn these new opportunities into something solid and long-term.

Mercury in Libra and Venus in Leo, 1st and 11th houses respectively, form a favorable angle to each other – a sextile. You communicate well with female friends, a romantic partner, and move a little closer to some dream you hold.

Drowning in Metaphor

Think about this.

We humans often take our signals from the world around us. So as trump approaches the end of his disastrous four years and seeks re-election, what do the metaphors tell us? There are so many, I’ll just hit the big ones here.

According to CNN, not since 1971 have there been five storms in the Atlantic.

Since March 11, when WHO declared COVID as a pandemic, our lives have been turned upside down and inside out. Nearly 200,000 Americans are dead. Millions are unemployed. Millions more line up at food banks around the country. The economy has tanked and isn’t likely to recover any time soon. The virus has been politicized right down to whether people wear masks – or not. The country is completely polarized. Every day, nearly every hour, the news- online and off – features trump’s latest gaffe, latest lie, latest chaos somewhere in the country.

Wildfires that are consuming the west are attributed to climate change by scientists and activist. But trump says they’re happening because the forest floors aren’t clean. So I guess all of you people in the west should get out there with your vacuum cleaners. At least trump hasn’t tried to redraw the hurricane center’s forecasts for these storms as he did last year, I think it was. But he has appointed Michael Caputo, a climate change denier, general weirdo and conspiracy theorists in charge of Health & Human Services, the agency that governs the CDC.

From CNN: “He (Caputo) has accused career government scientists of “sedition” in their response to coronavirus and claiming without evidence that a critical federal health agency has a “resistance unit” against President Donald Trump.”

Then there’s the USPS fiasco and its trump appointee…(the collection of mailboxes, removing sorting machines)

And this is just a tiny part of what’s come to light in the last few days. So, going back to metaphors, what do they tell us about our personal futures? About the future of democracy? About the future of this country?

Chaotic. Broken. Dysfunctional. And if we get another four years of trump, it will collapse into autocracy, dictatorship, and abject misery for most of us.

I’ve often wondered if this is how Germans felt as Hitler was coming to power.

It can’t happen here!

Then: How can this be happening here?

And finally: I’m outta here!

But right now, we’re not welcome in other countries. Trump has succeeded with is wall – now built around the USA.

#217

Back in August, my friend Jennifer in Denver invited me to zoom with her book club, a group of women who had read The Synchronicity Highway. During the meeting, there was some discussion about a dog named Luna who had gone missing and Jennifer’s friend, Barb, had been looking for the dog in her neighborhood. That name kept cropping up and Barb was curious about whether it was a synchro.

In a follow up email, I mentioned that Luna meant moon in Spanish and that Barb should pay attention to the next new and full moons on 9/2 and 9/17 respectively. Turned out that 217 is a number that has appeared repeatedly into her life and may be an instance of spirit communication with her deceased mother.

Here’s Barb’s rendition of the importance of 217 in her life:

217 was my mother’s lucky number & aqua was her favorite color.  She was the leader of Girl Scout Troop 217 for 17 years & loved it.  Whenever buying lottery tickets she would always play those 3 numbers in any combinations & though she never hit the biggest win she did manage to win over $300 which she used to buy her first & only airplane ticket for a visit to Colorado.  After she passed away, the number 217 kept keeps appearing in my life or I’m just more aware of that number now & also the color aqua hit me straight in the face once.

Shortly after her death on a business trip to hospitals in Montana, I was driving around a bend & first saw Flathead Lake near Polson, Montana.  It was the most striking color of clear blue/green water that I have ever seen. While reading the local newspaper the next day it mentioned the exceptional color of the water the day before & described the color as AQUA (1st Synchro).

During my trips to hospitals in several states, I was staying at a hotel which put me in their Room 217.  (2nd Synchro).

One weekend I drove to Estes Park, CO & stopped at the Stanley Hotel gift shop.  I was so surprised to see mugs, key chains, door plates, glasses etc. with the number 217 on them (3rd Synchro).  Turns out that Room 217 is the haunted room in Steven King’s book The Shining & the mini series was filmed at The Stanley Hotel. I had seen that movie several times but never paid attention to the actual haunted Room 217 until being in that gift shop shortly after my mom’s passing.  I purchased a few beer mugs, key chains & door plates. Our guest bedroom has my mom’s furniture from the 1950s & the door has a door plate that says The Stanley Hotel 217.  The gift shop also had a room plate with Overlook Hotel 217 (the hotel that Steven King named in The Shining) which I purchased. Also a key to our house on a Room 217 key chain is always handed to company staying with us.

A few years BEFORE my mom passed away a childhood friend from grade school that I still keep in touch with called me after the 4th of July in  2001 saying that she thought my mom’s picture was in the Canton, Ohio Repository newspaper from the year  1963. She sent me the clipping. Sure enough, it was my mom proudly marching with her Girl Scout Troop 217 during a 4th of July parade on September 17, 1963 ( 9/17).  So this is the most bizarre Synchro from Trish’s dates in your email.  The  9/17 date she said to pay attention to is the same date as the picture of the 4th of July parade only it was in another year (1963).

Going back in time again, after showing my mom her picture in the paper in 2001 (a few years before her passing), she wanted to make a visit to the Girl Scout Headquarters in Canton for a tour & to donate her memorabilia. So the number 217 helped us to bond & forgive in the end & still seems to creep into my life today.  What does it mean?  I have no idea…

Sometimes now when I wake up at night around two in the morning even though the clock may not say exactly 2:17 I might just lie awake until it does read 2:17 a.m. before closing my eyes again…

After this Pandemic is over, welcoming guests to Room 217 at our home in Colorado can resume!
