The I Ching and Contact

In one of the comments the other day, Sansego mentioned that V was back on TV and he wondered if we were being prepared for contact. Then there are the rumors that Obama may be preparing to announce that ETs have attempted to contact with us. So tonight, with those things in mind, I asked the I Ching: Are we being prepared for contact?
I threw hexagram 13, Fellowship with Man. “True fellowship among men must be based on a concern that is universal. It is not the private interests of the individual that create lasting fellowship among men, but rather the goals of humanity. That is why it is said that fellowship with men in the open succeeds.” The first thing that struck me about this paragraph was  in the open. Does that sound like disclosure? The paragraph continues: “If unity of this kind prevails, even difficult and dangerous tasks, such as crossing the great water, can be accomplished.” The Ching talks a lot about crossing the great water. Perhaps, in this instance, space itself can be the great water. “But in order to bring about this sort of fellowship, a persevering and enlightened leader is needed – a man with clear, convincing, and inspiring aims and the strength to carry them out.”
There was one changing line in this hexagram – nine in the fifth. This one puzzles me. It talks about two people who are outwardly separated, but united in their hearts. They’re kept apart by their positions in life. “Many difficulties and obstructions arise between them and cause them grief. But, remaining true to each other, they allow nothing to separate them and although it costs them a severe struggle to overcome the obstacles, they will succeed. When they come together, their sadness will change to joy.” In my imagination, this becomes an ET love story about two aliens separated separated by great distances. Okay, probably not!
This changing line results in a second hexagram – #30, The Clinging, Fire. “What is dark clings to what is light and so enhances the brightness of the latter. A luminous thing giving out light must have within itself something that perseveres; otherwise it will in time burn itself out… The twofold clarity of the dedicated man clings to what is right and thereby can shape the world.” But here’s the part that struck me:  “Human life on earth is conditioned and unfree and when man recognizes this limitation and makes himself dependent upon the harmonious and beneficent forces of the cosmos, he achieves success.”
So, did the I Ching answer the question? Are we being prepared for contact? The hexagrams seems to suggest that yes, we are. But the I Ching doesn’t stop there. It appears to be offering advice and insight on what contact will mean for humanity. It seems to indicate that to survive such an experience, we must unite and that we need an enlightened leader to do that. Is Obama such a leader? Is any politician enlightened?
So, back to square one. This is the problem I often have with an oracle that originated in ancient China. Perhaps a master of the I Ching will interpret this! Any takers?

    co exists?

Awesome post! We would be very fortunate indeed if aliens look like E.T. rather than the lizard ones on "V" or even the strange looking ones on "District 9".

This remake of "V" seems to be going in a more spiritual direction than the original, which I love. Anna (the leader of the aliens) was asking questions about the human soul. I've read that "The Greys" don't have emotions, so part of the reason for their abduction of humans for doing probes is to find out how emotions work. Creepy stuff. I'm having an argument on Facebook with an atheist about the soul. He, of course, doesn't believe on exists. The argument is that he believes that robots / machines someday will have emotions. I argued that they wouldn't be able to have emotions without a soul. I believe animals have souls, and we know that they have emotions, too.

Just an FYI, on Coast to Coast AM Saturday night (15 January), they will be talking about "strange coincidences. Don't know if you're night owls, but you might want to listen in. I loved their discussion on numerology on Thursday night. Very insightful!!!

That's the book I couldn't remember, Gypsy! The secret life of plants. Thanks!

i've been in and out here today, too – just hitting and missing – and so, like cj, will comment more tomorrow – but such an interesting post!

and lest i forget, i think the first book i read on the plant studies was peter tompkins and christopher bird's "the secret life of plants" back in the early to mid 70's – i've had several copies over the years but don't think i have one at the moment – in any event, great book – and of course, since then, the intention experiment –

anyway – glad to help cj! great to "see" you now! 😉

thanks for another great great post, trish and rob – love all the comments, as well!

guess what I was supposed to say though about cells reacting form 100 miles away was "supposedly",, not like your suppose to believe everything you see in print, but it does sound like cj might of read from the book, cause the plant stuff is in it….

I never find the I Ching easy!

Line 5 in my book, which sort of makes sense in regard to the question:

You have joined in a strong union with others. This union is highly structured and causes many hardships at first. You are not used to the new constraints and responsibilities that accompany membership. When you do become accustomed to them you will find your life easier than before, with less anxieties, less practical difficulties and more ease and joy.

    So not all bad!

    >>One thing I have noticed over the years of pestering the I Ching with questions is that often, especially in questions like the one you asked, is I get back a reflection of what I would like.

I've found the same to be true with stichomancy, divination by dictionary or other books.

  13. Trish and Rob MacGregor says:

Simple, are you talking about Uncle Buck's Big Blue Book? That's a Wicca tome. Then there's the Air Force's Blue Book on UFOs, the auto consumer industry's blue book on car values, and finally, the construction industry's blue book. You did get it from a contractor, right?

  14. Trish and Rob MacGregor says:

Luis – thanks for the feedback! Love your analogy of divination to a harp.

I just didn't want it to.<<<

I agree with Adele here. First, you must realize that the Yijing was an administration tool of the state in ancient China. In this context, that means the following: As you are not an appointed "decision maker" (king, president, ruler) when macro-questioning (for "macro" I mean outside our immediate personal circle) what you receive is a simple reflexion of what your feelings are about the matter in question. For example, if all the people in a given country/kingdom were to consult the Yijing with a specific question that applies to the whole set, you would potentially receive as many different answers as people asking (sure, you can calculate statistics and come up with the most common answer but for the sake of clarity, let's stick to the image). That isn't efficient. Only one who is at the head of an extended group can ask on behalf of that group. Simple. Unless, and this is where it gets weird (/er?), you keep the results to yourself. Heed the oracle as what affects the group ultimately affects you but treat the result as a personal dialogue with it. It goes into some QM realm but the reasoning is that once you share your results you are "fixing/collapsing a state of consciousness" that's immediately in conflict with the rest of the group, even if a subset of the group resonates with it.

Divination works like harp. When you collapse a state with divination, you are plucking a string that not only vibrates itself but makes other strings, and the whole instrument, vibrate. It isn't a passive affair, specially when the sound is projected further than an earshot, just to add and dissipate into a cacophony of other vibrations.

Without a "Mandate of Heaven" (no theology here but a translation of a handy Chinese idiom, 天命 Tianming, basically what gives legitimacy to a ruler, appointed or otherwise), when one divines, one divines for oneself.

just to stay up to date there Rob+ Trish,, Trish and Rob,,, I hear much on your sight about Jung'
Red Book,, so you guys are unaware of the big Blue book,, it is one that back in "05" after some stuff happened,, well not like I can really type about it,, but a contractor I know got some work for a guy who happened to have this such book,, sold me a copy,, paper back about 12tall 10inches broad couple of hundred pages,, most exstensive summmary of paranormal expermental testing out there,, and considering it name…….. that's where the saliva story comes from….. but like I tell the fam… it ain't my subject (well I didn't find it,, IT found ..)

    w.v. "tryph",,,, gosh I don't feel sick

Here's an interesting YouTube video from a lecture in Zurich by Little Grandmother, which touches on contact and earth changes. She seems to be in a trance as she talks.

  18. Nancy says:

From everything I'm reading – directly from people in highly classified government positions – we have had contact for a long time, but it is now that other countries are tired of waiting and are coming forth, leaving the US to either come clean or really look dumb. The people involved in the Discloser Project believe there will be a big show of contact very soon, with an alien visitor speaking to the UN.

I think the I-Ching is saying Yes!

  19. Trish and Rob MacGregor says:

Thanks, Adele! I figured you would interpret this far better than I can.

  20. Adele Aldridge says:

    Hi Trish and Rob,

Hey, it is interesting that you are asking the I Ching such a question. Of course we have to remember that the I Ching developed in a time when "crossing the great water" was a very big deal and we have to look at the I ching symbolically like we would a dream.

One thing I have noticed over the years of pestering the I Ching with questions is that often, especially in questions like the one you asked, is I get back a reflection of what I would like. When I ask more personal questions this does not happen when I will get answers I do not like, I will then say to myself that the I Ching does not always work and then bamm! it turns out to be right. I just didn't want it to.

My reading on Hexagram 13, Friendship in the Open, is something we would like and I love that fifth line reading, one of my favorites in the I Ching. I think that line is all about ESP – something that I am sure happens to any one who reads this Blog. When it happens, we know it, whether people believe us or not.

And when line 5 changes you get Hexagram 30, "The Clinging Fire" As with most of the I Ching Hexagrams, I found that depending on the situation they can often be read in a number of ways. That's the power of the I Ching. Sometimes, just like with a dream, I have to wait and see what happens. In this case, whether the answer to your question, points to a "real" contact happening, I love the answer you got. Very friendly. Maybe it is telling us to be more opening friendly – much the way the tone of Obama's and the other's speeches were at that memorial service.

I'm wondering about the significance of Hexagram 30. It is also referred to as "Radiance" and light spreading in all directions. We could ponder this for hours, the double meaning of Fire – both as illumination and that fire can be destructive.

However, what could be a better answer to your question? It sounds like a yes to me.

  21. Lauren says:

Hmm……..Oracles are notoriously obscure and reflect a multitude of meanings, not unlike dreams. But on the surface, it certainly seems kind of like a "yes". I can't even begin to imagine what the world would be like if there was an official Contact, although I am sure all kinds of religious types would immediately turn it into either a Rapture or the Anti-Christ.

Or maybe a New Era, like in Star Trek when the Vulcans turned up……

  22. Trish and Rob MacGregor says:

    I know what you mean!

  23. DJan says:

My problem with the oracle is that you could get it to mean almost anything in relation to today's world. I was more confused after reading it all than I was before! 🙂
