Catalyst

In novels and movies, the catalyst is the event, the point in time, where an event occurs that alters the life of the protagonist. It’s the harbinger of change. Jessica Brody, in Save the Cat Writes a Novel, writes, “The Catalyst will crash land in your hero’s life and create so much destruction, your hero will have no choice but to do something different. Try something new. Go somewhere else.”

Each of us is the protagonist in our own story. And most catalysts involve synchronicity.

The Catalyst is one of the fifteen beats that screenwriter Blake Snyder identifies in story telling in Save the Cat: The Last Book on Screenwriting That You’ll Ever Need. It can come as bad news, a divorce, getting fired. It may arrive in the form of seeing the spirit of your dad in the back seat of your car, a Near Death Experience, an alien encounter, a spiritual or creative epiphany. But all catalysts have the same thing in common: you’re kicked out of your status quo thinking and banished from your  comfort box, the matrix where you’ve been living.

In the movie Romancing the Stone, the catalyst occurs with the package delivered to Joan Wilder – Kathleen Stone. In J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone, it’s the arrival of mysterious letters that Harry’s Uncle Vernon won’t let him see and the arrival of Hagrid, announcing that Harry is a wizard and has been accepted into Hogwarts.

In Stephen King’s Misery, Brody identifies the catalyst as the moment when Annie Wilkes finishes Paul’s Misery’s Child and discovers that Paul “killed off the main character, putting an end to her favorite series…she goes ballistic…then storms out of the room and tells Paul she’s leaving before she does something unwise.’”

What’s the equivalent in our lives now? Well, for us, it’s the January 20 Inauguration.

Stay tuned! Our newest book is based on the ideas in our Mystical Underground  podcasts.

Asparagus Anyone?

We don’t hear many synchronicity stories about vegetables, but here’s one about asparagus. It starts though with a serial synchronicity about kidneys…and there’s a connection. It comes from Jane Clifford, a native of England residing in Wales.

“My daughter, Sophie, had two serious kidney infections this year and thankfully has recovered. Two weeks ago, my best friend of forty-five years had to go to accident and emergency twice with terrible kidney pain diagnosed as a kidney infection.

“Then today Sophie’s best friend’s partner in Switzerland was diagnosed with serious kidney issues and is on dialysis. These things tend to come to me in 3s!

“Anyway, today I was telling Sophie on the phone that years ago I had read about asparagus being amazing medicine for kidneys and it included case histories. I wished I had saved the information to pass it on.

“Hours later, I was visiting a friend’s FB page and there it was, the exact information about asparagus that I want to share! I’m in the flow today, it seems.”

Of course we wanted to know what the connection was between asparagus and kidney issues. What Jane sent began with an article from a former Navy seaman who had been stationed in Key West, Florida.

“In 1986, I worked at the clinic at Naval Air Station on Big Coppitt Key just a few miles north of Key West. The hospital at Key West was for out-patients only for retired armed forces personnel that lived in the area. If you needed to be hospitalized, you were sent to Homestead AFB Florida.

“I had the day off and went inside the hospital. (Corpsman barracks were next to hospital). There was a retired Navy man who worked in the lab, a retired biochemist from the USN. He asked me what was going on that day and I said I had the day off.  I told him that I wished I was working, because the crew on today was taking a sailor to Homestead. He had a very bad kidney infection, and needed hospitalization.

“Now this elderly gent told me the man should have eaten more asparagus, and he wouldn’t have that problem. I asked why?  I’ll never forget him saying, do you eat asparagus? and I said yes, I love them. He replied you notice how your urine stinks after eating asparagus? I said well I never thought it was what I ate but yes it does have a pungent odor.  He said, it was because the asparagus was detoxifying your body of harmful chemicals.

The biochemist later emailed the corpsman the following:

“Several years ago, I met a man seeking asparagus for a friend who had cancer. He gave me a copy of an article, entitled “Asparagus For Cancer” printed in the Cancer News Journal, December 1979. I will share it here, just as it was shared with me: I am a biochemist, and have specialized in the relation of diet to health for over 50 years. “Several years ago, I learned of the discovery of Richard R. Vensal, D.D.S. that asparagus might cure cancer. Since then, I have worked with him on his project. We have accumulated a number of favorable case histories. Here are a few examples:

“Case No. 1. A man with an almost hopeless case of Hodgkin’s disease (cancer of the lymph glands) who was completely incapacitated. Within 1 year of starting the asparagus therapy, his doctors were unable to detect any signs of cancer, and he was back on a schedule of strenuous exercise

“Case No. 2. A successful businessman, 68 years old, suffered from cancer of the bladder for 16 years.  After years of medical treatments, including radiation without improvement, he began taking asparagus. Within 3 months, examinations revealed that his bladder tumor had disappeared and that his kidneys were normal.

“Case No. 3. On March 5th 1971, a man who had lung cancer was put on the operating table where they found lung cancer so widely spread that it was inoperable.  The surgeon sewed him up and declared his case hopeless. On April 5th he heard about the Asparagus therapy and immediately started taking it. By August, x-ray pictures revealed that all signs of the cancer had disappeared. He is now back at his regular business routine.

“Case No. 4. A woman had been troubled for a number of years with skin cancer. She developed different skin cancers which were diagnosed by the acting specialist as advanced. Within 3 months after beginning asparagus therapy, the skin specialist said her skin looked fine with no more skin lesions. This woman reported that the asparagus therapy also cured her kidney disease, which had started in 1949. She had over 10 operations for kidney stones, and was receiving government disability payments for an inoperable, terminal, kidney condition. She attributes the cure of this kidney trouble entirely to the asparagus treatment.

+++

Hmm, is this stuff true? Asparagus, a cure all, a cancer killer? Why doesn’t the corpsman and the biochemist have names? But the nameless biochemist wasn’t finished. So we read on.

+++

“I was not surprised at this result. `The Elements of “Materia Medica’, edited in 1854 by a Professor at the University of Pennsylvania, stated that asparagus was used as a popular remedy for kidney stones. He even referred to experiments, in 1739, on the power of asparagus in dissolving stones. Note the dates!  We would have other case histories, but the medical establishment has interfered with our obtaining some of the records. I am therefore appealing to readers to spread this good news and help us to gather a large number of case histories that will overwhelm the medical skeptics about this unbelievably simple and natural remedy.

“For the treatment, asparagus should be cooked before using. Fresh or canned asparagus can be used. I have corresponded with the two leading canners of asparagus, Giant and Stokely, and I am satisfied that these brands contain no pesticides or preservatives.  Place the cooked asparagus in a blender and liquefy to make a puree. Store in the refrigerator. Give the patient 4 full tablespoons twice daily, morning and evening.  Patients usually show some improvement in 2-4 weeks.  It can be diluted with water and used as a cold or hot drink.  This suggested dosage is based on present experience, but certainly larger amounts can do no harm and may be needed in some cases.

“As a biochemist I am convinced of the old saying that `what cures can prevent.’ Based on this theory, my wife and I have been using asparagus puree as a beverage with our meals. We take 2 tablespoons diluted in water to suit our taste with breakfast and with dinner. I take mine hot and my wife prefers hers cold. For years we have made it a practice to have blood surveys taken as part of our regular checkups. The last blood survey, taken by a medical doctor who specializes in the nutritional approach to health, showed substantial improvements in all categories over the last one, and we can attribute these improvements to nothing but the asparagus drink. As a biochemist, I have made an extensive study of all aspects of cancer, and all of the proposed cures. As a result, I am convinced that asparagus fits in better with the latest theories about cancer.

“Asparagus contains a good supply of protein called histones, which are believed to be active in controlling cell growth. For that reason, I believe asparagus can be said to contain a substance that I call cell growth normalizer. That accounts for its action on cancer and in acting as a general body tonic. In any event, regardless of theory, asparagus used as we suggest, is a harmless substance. The FDA cannot prevent you from using it and it may do you much good. It has been reported by the US National Cancer Institute, that asparagus is the highest tested food containing glutathione, which is considered one of the body’s most potent anticarcinogens and antioxidants.

“Just a side note… In case you are wondering why this has not been made public, there is no profit in curing cancer.”

+++

Our assessment is that eating or drinking blended asparagus is harmless and nutritious. But does it cure cancer? Well, that’s another matter. It doesn’t take long these days to check out such stories. Here an article about the asparagus therapy. It’s written by Dr. Joe Schwarcz for the McGill Office of Science and Society, a newsletter with the sub-title: Separating Sense from Nonsense. Yes, it’s quite skeptical.

The author, Dr. Joe Schwarcz apparently read the material above, because in his assessment, he notes:

“These stunning results obtained with asparagus therapy are reported by some unnamed biochemist who learned of the discovery from an article in a journal that cannot be found written by Richard Vensal, a dentist who cannot be found.”

Schwarcz’s article is called…”Can Asparagus be a Treatment for Cancer,” but it could’ve been called:  “Spare us the Asparagus.”

We had asparagus for dinner this evening with a fish stew I made. Hey, it can’t hurt.

So it goes.

Brooklyn Ghost Story

Over the past couple of years, our long-time friend Melissa, aka Queenie Bee, has mentioned disturbances in the apartment she shares with husband, Jon. From time to time, she senses another presence and so does her cat whose fur on her back rises up. Was it her imagination. Old buildings are known for making creaking sounds, after all.

But Melissa’s latest encounter seems to suggest something more from the ghosty realm. Here it is.

“Latest installment in our ghost story — last night at about 2:00 AM I went downstairs to sleep on the couch. Jon’s snoring had woken me up and I couldn’t get back to sleep.  It wasn’t long though before I was feeling that someone or something was here with me.  And Geisha ran over to the kitchen table acting like something was over there.

“She dealt with that and then came over and protected me. She was in a guarding stance and then finally snuggled in and went to sleep. This morning, Jon woke up and immediately told me he had a nightmare and I started laughing hysterically for no reason.

“In his dream ,he saw a dead lady sitting at our kitchen table in the same spot Geisha ran to and where I had felt some other presence. His description of what she looked like did not please me. I think that is weird!

“I thought my imagination was going off on a tangent since I had watched a scary movie earlier in the evening. But then Jon told me his dream. I can tell you for sure it is not Nana or my friend Sarah or anyone I know…unless they are supremely pissed in the afterlife! I told the ghost this morning that we are cool with her presence as long as she is nice.”

So Jon’s dream–as well as Geisha’s reaction–provided Melissa with a sense of verification of her experience. No doubt we’ll hear more. I say that because of Melissa’s actions to welcome the ghost. My preference would be taking action to send the lost being–if that’s what she’s dealing with–on its way into the other world. Doing so is not necessarily done out of fear, but out of compassion.

Perspective – A Year Later

If you look back to last year at this time, there are some eerie parallels. In early January 2020, Trump’s impeachment was winding down – not enough to vote for conviction. I first read about the corona virus. A passing reference, nothing more. I remember because my neighbor was really ill, with three or four hospital stays. I had read about the corona symptoms and they sounded a lot like what my neighbor was experiencing. I asked her husband, a commercial pilot, if he’d flown to China recently.

“Not my route,” he said.

“Annette’s symptoms sound like this new corona virus in Wuhan, Kevin.”

He shook his head and said they’d been told she had a B virus.

On January 10, 2020, when the much talked about Saturn/Jupiter conjunction in Capricorn happened, Wuhan released the genome sequence of the virus. It was around this time that the trump admin was first notified about the virus.

Today is January 13, 2021. The House will vote on the second impeachment of trump, the only time in history that a president has been impeached twice. Thanks to Bob Woodward’s book, we know that trump knew about this virus back in January but chose to ignore it. So as of today, the virus trump said would magically disappear in April, has killed more than 380,000 Americans. But a vaccine is available – if your state has a plan.  Florida never had a plan for anything. Our governor, Ron DeSantis is a trump lapdog. But that’s another story.

Here in the east, this is a new moon day, at 23 degrees Capricorn. The moon, Saturn, Jupiter and Mercury are all in Aquarius, in trump’s 5th and 6th houses. Saturn and Jupiter will be playing tag for awhile, and now they’re just 2 degrees apart.

Saturn represents the status quo, government, structure, rules, discipline. Jupiter represents expansion, the higher mind and higher education, your worldview, spirituality, luck, synchronicity. Transiting Jupiter at 5 degrees Aquarius in the outer circle of the chart is opposed to Trump’s natal Pluto at 10 Leo in the 12th house, the inner circle. Pluto represents power. The spirituality (conscience?) of people in the government becomes central. Do you vote for a person or for a country? Are you loyal to your ideals, your vows, your moral compass – and the constitution – or are you loyal to a person?

That 23 degree Capricorn moon. I have a superstition about the #23. In the I Ching, that hexagram is called Splitting Apart. Author Robert Anton Wilson collected hundreds of incidents involving that particular number. Capricorn is the sign of government. They have a new opportunity to do the right thing, but thanks to that #23, things may have to split apart first.

Stay tuned for February astrological forecast.

The Power of Symbols

Symbols are powerful. Carl Jung knew it. Rosa Parks knew it. Martin Luther King knew it. Princess Di  knew it. And it seems that some members of congress now know it.

The U.S. Capitol is a symbol of democracy. On January 6, it was invaded by a mob that trump had incited. They broke into the chambers of the senate and house of representatives, a shocking metaphor for democracy and freedom under siege. But beneath the symbol, senators and members of Congress cowered in fear in their offices, under desks, behind stacked chairs. Beneath the symbol, the siege became personal.

The fact that the siege was televised all over the world, that international leaders expressed their horror and revulsion at what they were seeing on their televisions, became a humiliation. Josh Hawley and Ted Cruz have become another type of symbol – that of hungry ambition, without moral compass. Like trump, really.

Another weird symbol during that siege – that mobster wearing horns and what looked like war paint on his face. He didn’t wear a mask, so I suspect he won’t be difficult to identify. But what about the rest of these brainwashed, dangerous idiots?

And will any form of censure be taken against Cruz, Hawley, Cotton? And what about all those members of congress who signed on to object to the certification process even after the siege on the Capitol? Are there consequences for that? And all of this, of course, took place during a major symbol – a pandemic.

According to Worldometer, the U.S. has the highest number of covid cases in the world – 23,340,710  as of today, January 12, with 389,041 total deaths. We also lead the world for the  worst failure on the globe for containing this pandemic. Even our vaccine distribution is a joke. These figures are symbols of the trump era.

He never dealt with the pandemic like a leader. He lied.

He never led anything. He lied.

And his lies were believed by his cult followers.

When symbols are broken and created from that rubble, then we’re at the juncture of the old paradigm and the new, an old paradigm that no longer serves us struggling to survive as a new, more egalitarian paradigm moves in, a force of nature.

May impeachment or the 25th amendment get rid of him, please. And then let’s see  this conman hit with the fact that the law is coming for him, his tax returns, and his corrupt kids and inner circle.

The Mystical Underground: Toren Atkinson: The Darkest Of The Hillside Thickets

A new episode of The Mystical Underground is live! “Toren Atkinson: The Darkest Of The Hillside Thickets”:

Join Trish, Rob and Jon for a conversation with…

Toren Atkinson has been a professional artist since 1996. He’s created book covers, comic books, film production art, illustration for board, card & roleplaying games, album covers, tattoos, and T-shirt designs.

Toren is also one of the founding members and the lead singer for the Canadian rock-n-roll/power-pop band, The Darkest of the Hillside Thickets. Toren and lead guitarist Warren Banks formed the band in 1992. The band’s name is drawn from a phrase in H.P. Lovecraft’s story The Tomb: “I will tell only of the lone tomb in the darkest of the hillside thickets.” Atkinson and Banks decided to create a band around the Cthulhu mythos because it was a topic they were interested in, and it was a unique “niche that needed to be filled.”

He has a former podcast called “Caustic Soda” and a current podcast called “Toren’s Guide to Everything.”
Toren co-wrote the Spaceship Zero RPG with his bandmate Warren Banks and is currently working on a new RPG environment called Ruin Nation.

The Bowie Bird

Today, January 10 is the fifth anniversary of David Bowie’s death.

Last year on this date, instead of spending the day with her family, Iman – who was Bowie’s wife – went hiking through the San Francisco redwoods. She went alone, but while there joined a guided tour.

Along the way, she saw a bluebird fly right in front of her — “A bluebird, above all things!” she exclaimed.  Bowie’s final antemortem single, “Lazarus”, includes the lines, “You know, I’ll be free/ Just like that bluebird/ Now ain’t that just like me?”

“I asked the tour guide, and he said, ‘Oh, they’re very rare here, bluebirds,’” Iman continued. “And so now, instead of remembering it as sad, it is more of a joyous day.”

The model and philanthropist related her story to a reporter for Harper’s Bazaar. She and Bowie were married in 1992 and they had a child together in 2000. They remained married to the end.

From the article: Despite being a glamorous supermodel and a beloved rock god, Iman insisted their family life “could not have been more regular! It was a really everyday marriage.”

She continued: “He was a very funny, warm gentleman – you know, everyone talks about him being futuristic, but no, he was not, he liked more than anything to wear a three-piece suit. It was a beautiful, ordinary life and that was what was great about it. We could live in New York, pick up our daughter from school, walk everywhere… You know, I wish we had had more years.”

Bowie died Jan. 10, 2016 of liver cancer.

At the gym

After Rob and I got our initial Pfizer vaccines, we started returning to our local gym but a little at a time. When he went and I didn’t, I always asked how many were wearing masks. The percentage varied according to the day of the week.

Once I started going back, I met a 58 year-old blond in the leg machine area. She was getting in shape for her 40th high school reunion. I learned that her daughter in law was a paralegal for a large law firm in West Palm Beach and was pregnant. Once vaccines became mandated for companies employing more than a hundred people, I got blow by blows about how her daughter-in-law was going to lose her job because she didn’t want to get vaccinated while she was pregnant.

I thought about this issue a lot. Would I, when pregnant, have gotten Pfizer or Moderna or J&J? I started researching.

According to website Everyday Health, “More than 125,000 pregnant women have been diagnosed with COVID-19 since the pandemic began.” These stats are from the CDC. So far, more than 22,000 of these women have been hospitalized and 161 have died.
“COVID-19 patients who are pregnant are twice as likely to require admission to the intensive care unit (ICU) and 70 percent more likely to die than individuals who aren’t pregnant, according to the CDC. As reported by the CDC in September 2021, a record number of pregnant women — 22 — died of COVID-19 in August.

Just 31 percent of pregnant women in the United States have been fully vaccinated, the CDC reported. And vaccination rates are even lower for pregnant women of color, at 25 percent for Hispanic mothers and 16 percent among Black mothers.

The CDC says that nearly all the Covid-19 cases among pregnant women to date have been among unvaccinated individuals.

So, if I were pregnant, would I get the vaccine?

Yes.

My blonde gym friend tells me that her daughter in law refuses the vaccine and is going to lose her job in November because of it. And with that job loss, there goes her health insurance.

“That really makes the case for universal health care, doesn’t it?” I asked her.
She looked surprised, as if she hadn’t connected the two, then nodded. “Yeah, it sure does.”

But…It’s there in her voice.

The blonde is fully vaccinated, no longer wears a mask, thinks our governor (now known as DeathDeSantis) is doing a great job. No vaccine mandates in this state, no mask mandates, no mandates of any kind in Florida. No siree. That’s why he has sued school districts over mask mandates, sued cruises ships leaving from Florida that demand proof of vaccines. He panders to the trump base and yes, has presidential aspirations.

This mindset is also why Florida has lost more than 58,000 people since the beginning of the pandemic, a consistent third behind California and Texas for the most cases, the most deaths. And even these numbers for Florida are suspected to be higher.

But I don’t say any of this. I acknowledge her spiel, and tell her why I think DeSantis is a jerk. Our minds aren’t changed. But we temporarily feel better.

Rob and I got our boosters and haven’t yet grown extra limbs, an extra head, alien bodies. But if we do, here’s a promise: If we do become aliens, then we’ll take over the planet!

Cosmic Time!

On a recent night, I let our dogs out the front door at about 11:15. It was Dec. 20, the day after the full moon, and the day before the winter solstice. As the dogs were doing their business sniffing around and watering the foliage, I looked up and noticed not only the bright moon, but an expansive ring around it.

I brought the dogs back in, told Trish about the ring around the moon, and we went out the back of the house where we have a better view of the sky. This time, I noticed a white streak, probably from a passing jet, just crossing into the right side of the ring.

Duly impressed by the sight, Trish returned to her office to whatever she was working on. But I stayed out because I noticed that streak was quickly sliding left through the circles and in a minute, at about 11:25, it would cross through the moon.

When it did, I snapped a couple of pics, including the one above. I went back inside, showed them to Trish and said, “Hey, it looks like a cosmic clock. It’s five to five.”

I went to my room and after a few minutes decided to send the pic to Trish and daughter Megan in Orlando. That was when I  realized that, no, it wasn’t just five to five, it could also be 11:25. I looked at time and saw it was 11:34 as I sent the pics. So when I took the photo, it was very close, if not exactly 11:25. A cosmic clock!
