The Wind Phone

I (Rob) was riding my bike in the regional park that’s adjacent to the Everglades a few miles from home when I came to the end of one of the paths and saw the Wind Phone.

I knew right away it wasn’t about the wind. It appeared somewhat like  little book exchanges some people create at the street-side of their property. But this wasn’t about books any more that it was about the wind.

It was about spirit contact. It’s where you can call the dead.

If you look closely into the top part of the box, you can see the spirit phone. Also in that box is a notebook where you can leave a message for a lost loved one. The phone is just over a month old and already there are about a dozen messages.

I’d never heard of wind phones but now I know a lot more about them. A wind phone is a rotary or push-button phone located in a secluded spot in nature, usually within a booth-type structure and often next to a chair or bench. But don’t expect a dial tone. The phone line is disconnected.

According to an article in Smithsonianmag: People use the wind phone to “call” and have a one-way conversation with deceased loved ones. Here they can say the things left unsaid. Wind phones offer a setting for the person to tell the story of their grief, to reminiscence and to continue to connect to the person who is gone. For many, it is a deeply moving, life-affirming experience.

The articles on wind phones say they are a way of expressing grief, coming to closure. But for me I’d rather think that wind phones are a  place for two-way conversations or at least making a connection, spirit contact, maybe symbolically.

That’s what happened to me. On the bike ride into the park, a cousin of mine who had died a couple of decades ago came to mind before I’d even seen the wind phone. When I happened on the wind phone, I noticed a white feather on the ground nearby. I’ve always considered white feathers symbolic of spirit contact.

Did Cousin John have something to say to me?  I felt a nudge from him as I headed home to contact a man  at the house next door. He’s the father on the man who lives there and he visits from Michigan in the winter. This year I had avoided talking to him because of past political disconnects with that family. I’ll leave it at that.

But when I got home and saw him sitting on a chair in the front yard by himself reading a book, I went over and talked to him about senior aches and pains and medical stuff –  not politics – and gave him a non-fiction adventure book that I co-authored last year. He was very appreciative and a bit surprised. Thank you, Cousin John, for the nudge.

There are about 200 wind phones scattered throughout the United States and they are usually found in parks, along walking trails and on church grounds. It all began in Japan in 2010 when Itaru Sasaki, a garden designer, built a phone booth in his yard so he could “talk” with a deceased relative.

Months later, the Fukushima earthquake and tsunami hit and in a matter of minutes, more than 20,000 people died. Sasaki opened the phone booth to his neighbors, who urgently needed a place to express their grief. Word spread, and soon people came on pilgrimage from around Japan to speak through the “phone of the wind” to those they loved.

Since then, wind phones have spread throughout the world. You can find the one closest to you on the link.

What Trump is actually doing

…No mystery here. He’s doing what autocrats have always done – break the system so that he and his billionaire buddies can remain in power indefinitely.

Don’t believe it? Think things are great and spectacular, as one woman said to me today?

Google it.

And Google it again and again.

Bu if you still don’t believe it, well, then go back to Fox News for your daily brainwashing. & then head to your local grocery store or hardware store or any store and take a look at the rising prices. and try to convince yourself that trump is making things great again.

And rip off your blinders and take a clear  look at what he’s doing.  Because if all this continues, then in several weeks or months  we’ll look like Putin’s Russia, like North Korea, like Hungary. Read up on Nazi Germany, on Mussolini, on Chile’s Pinochet, on Venezuela’s Chavez and Maduro…

Trump is using the same autocratic playbook and being outspoken about it. As one friend now refers to him – President Capone.

It fits.

Huh?

Here’s another one of orange man’s executive orders signed today, February 6:

“Today, I’m signing an executive order to make our attorney general — who’s a great person, she’s going to be a great attorney general, Pam Bondi — the head of a task force brand new to eradicate anti-Christian bias,” Trump said at an event tied to the National Prayer Breakfast.

Huh?

What does this mean, exactly? What is anti-Christian bias, anyway? If I’m not mistaken, didn’t colonists come to this country in part because they wanted religious freedom – i.e., the spiritual freedom to believe what they wanted without fear of prosecution?

So does this mean your religious beliefs will be a criteria for being hired to a particular job that has nothing  to do with religion? Does it mean that writers shouldn’t have christianity  in their novels? Their non-fiction books?  Does it mean that if,  like our daughter, you’re going to be working with whales that you must do so from a christian perspective? And for whales, what the hell does that mean?

And oh, just for the record, Pam Bondi was the attorney general in Florida for awhile before she joined trump’s defense team during one of his impeachments. As AG here in Florida,  she usually sided with corporations. As orange man’s AG, you can be sure she’ll perk right up when it comes to this anti-Christian bias.  And that is likely to entail:

– trump is our savior because god saved him from an assassination attempt when the shooter got him in the ear-

– women should stay at home and have babies

– christianity should be taught in schools

– abortion should be banned nationwide

– men are superior to women

– white men are superior to everyone

Well, you  get the idea.

But the bottom line is that one of the principles on which this country was founded was the freedom of religion. So please, trump –  orange psychopath, convicted felon, grifter, general asshole – don’t presume to tell me what spiritual beliefs I can hold.

A shitty synchro…

Shit Happens Photograph by Humourous Quotes - Fine Art America

At the dog park today (Jan. 31), the small group who were gathered with their dogs at our usual place got into a conversation about, well, shit. It began when I posed the question of what happens to all the horse manure that’s created here in Wellington’s equestrian community. Apparently, this was an issue three years ago in the village and some sort of resolution came about.

That led Lloyd, owner of Abby, to talk about the word shit originated in ‘olden times’ when wet manure stowed in the hold of ships would ferment and generate hazardous methane and explode. So, Sacks of manure would be marked SHIT, meaning Ship High in Transit.

I had never heard that story, and to me it sounds like etymythology. So I offered another version of the origin of shit, which is considered the genuine origin. It’s from the Old English “scitte” which is related to the Dutch “schijten and the German “scheisse,” all meaning shit.”

But now comes the shitty synchro: Two hours later, the same group met for dinner at a Mexican restaurant in Wellington. We sat a table outside under a roof and adjacent to the open bar. From our table, we noticed a sign facing us just above the bar that seemed to relate to our earlier conversation. It reads: MANURE HAPPENS. An odd sign to see in a restaurant, but this is Wellington, Florida and there’s a lot of manureAmazon.com : Manure Happens Galvanized Metal Signs Retro Tin ..., aka shit happening here during the winter horse season.

The Coup is Happening

The dictionary definition  of coup is:  “a sudden, violent, and unlawful seizure of power from a government.” We’re seeing it happen now, in trump’s 3rd week as president.

There aren’t any guardrails this time around. No General Mattis. No Dr.Fauci. No one who has a conscience or courage to stand up to Trump and Musk and all their billionaire buddies. You won’t hear a peep from republicans.

We’ve already had  ICE roaming our community and the seasonal equestrians warning their Mexican workers to stay indoors. A Mexican friend says a friend of hers was seized by ICE as he was biking along a street here in town. Welcome to Nazi Germany. This is how it began.

Elon Musk, a South African immigrant and the richest dude on the planet, who paid trump $288 million for his position as co-president, gained access to the U.S. Treasury.

Time to start taking notes. A new Anne Frank may come out of this travesty. Or maybe people who cheered the day trump and musk  became prez will balk when they hit grocery store for eggs & have to pay 15 bucks for a dozen. Or 10 bucks for a single avocado. Because of trump’s tariffs.

I think it’s time to take to the streets by the 100s, the 1000s. Like during Vietnam. Nixon. Those travesties that now look like a game of Legos in comparison. Project 2025 is being implemented.

Whitley Strieber: The Fourth Mind

Join Trish and Rob for a conversation with…

Whitley Strieber began his writing career in the early 1980s with two great horror novels – The Wolfen and The Hunger. By the late 1980s, however, Whitley’s career had literally moved into the Act 2 upside-down world with the publication of Communion in 1989 about his experiences with strange alien “visitors” who he says came to his cabin in the New York countryside. It was the Number 1 New York Times Non-Fiction Bestseller and was on the list for 15 weeks. Since then, he has written several sequels to Communion – as well as other non-fiction and fiction titles. Now, he is coming out with The Fourth Mind, a new fascinating followup about what he has learned about the Visitors over the years, and even recently about anatomical details that have been revealed.
