During the early afternoon of August 5, Jorge Galeguillos and Franklin Lobos were driving into the Copiapo mine in Chile in a pickup truck when a huge slab of rock collapsed behind them. The collapse blocked the road behind them, so they had nowhere to go but forward. As Jorge wrote to his brother, “We had been up to the workshop and as we were driving back down, a slab of rock caved in behind us. It crashed down only a few seconds after we drove past. Just ahead, I saw a white butterfly. After that, we were caught in an avalanche of dirt and dust.”
Keep in mind that the butterfly was 500 meters or more than 1600 feet beneath the surface. What was this little insect doing that deep in the earth? The two men, perhaps struck by the oddity, slowed their truck as the dust cleared to get a closer look at the butterfly. It prevented them from driving right into the fallen rocks and cave-ins that had been triggered by the initial collapse and they were eventually able to make their way to the 31 other miners trapped deeper in the mine.
Jorge’s brother, Eleodoro contends that “our grandfathers knew it was a good omen to come across a white animal in the dark of the night.”
These butterflies are sometimes sighted around purple flowers that blossom for just a few hours in the Atacama desert when dew or fog is present. But as mining consultant Miguel Fortt noted, the closest cluster of these flowers lies two kilometers from the mine. “People who are religious would call this a miracle,” Fortt says. “From a scientific perspective, the butterfly may have flown into the mine on air currents. You can draw your own conclusions but that butterfly saved their lives.”
It’s interesting that in esoteric traditions, butterflies represent transformation, resurrection, the spirits of the dead. As Eleodoro remarked, “Maybe it was just a little angel passing in front of them…”
I saw a white butterfly fluttering in the garden just outside my window as I was reading this yesterday, but by the time I grabbed my camera and opened the door,it was gone,so I can't prove it to you unfortunately,so you'll just have to believe it,or not…sorry.
(it's spring here in Australia,by the way,so it's probably not that big of a sync, but still it was a white butterfly and not a Monarch or some other type)

RAY – YOU WOULD BE THE PERFECT GUY TO WRITE THIS BOOK. You could return to Chile and it would be a tax writeoff!
I wonder how many synchros are going to come out of this mine collapse when it is over. Someone should interview all the miners and write a book.
First the family that named their daughter Esperanza (Hope) and now being saved by a butterfly. There is something powerful about this collapse.

I'm going with a beautiful angel messenger. Why materialise in full Angel regalia when you would still be noticed as a butterfly?
Yesterday after I read this I was in the gym, in downtown Portland, and a butterfly flew by while I was on the stairmaster. I can honestly say that I have never seen a butterfly inside the gym before, and I wondered if it was some kind of sign…
Daz, what a synchronicity! I thought about The Mothman when the White Butterfly story evolved, and even mentioned the true saga of The Mothman to my husband….just yesterday! And now here you are talking about it, too! Is this blog-space bringing together linked minds or what!!!! So cool!

Hello. What a beautiful story. Did you know that in mythology, butterfly means soul? If not, and you're interested, read the story about Psyche and Eros (Cupid).
My daughter and I were on our way home from the store yesterday when I saw a small van with white butterflies on half of it. From the front to the middle (front, sides and top). I told her that I had never seen that many butterflies on a vehicle, but I was thinking besides cars decked out like the 70s with flowers and rainbows as well.
I became aware of synchronicities aobut 10 years ago. First the ocean (I live nowhere near one) and then butterflies.
My blog has the word "butterfly" as part of the subdomain name.
Life is more amazing, more fun, more enhanced, when we pay attention to synchronicities. And the more aware we are of them, the more synchronicities we witness.:)
I agree completely, Terri.
Daz – I didn't know this about the camps. Wow. Butterflies.
Kind of reminds me of a less creepier version of "The Mothman Prophecies".It seems Butterflies don't just have the power to transform their own lives, but also the lives of others.
I notice everywhere (well in Australia, anyway) in giftshops and bookstores that Butterflies are certainly the "in thing" at the moment.Maybe it's a sign that people are looking to transform their lives from the mundane to the spiritual.
I've read that in the concentration camps of WW2 the Butterfly was the most common thing found drawn on the walls of the prisoners cells.
Maybe that says something about our modern life today and why the Butterfly is so popular a symbol in the modern world, most people feel like prisoners, but unlike WW2, most times we are also our own jailers and it is we who have to transform ourselves or just crawl through life being caterpillars.

Yet another exquisite example, I think, of an "angel unaware". I own the conviction that there exists a Loving Creative Intelligence in the universe, by whatever name or names we as individuals may choose to give it…God, Allah, Gods and Goddesses, Universal Consciousness, whatever…and that Loving Creative Intelligence frequently guides and touches our lives us in such simple and seemingly mundane ways, that if we blink or look away, we may miss it. What better carrier of that Loving Spirit than the precious white butterfly! cj
In my opinion, spirit would choose what's already scientifically available on earth as the tool for a miracle or message.
I've often wanted messages from spirit to be grammatically correct and in neon but a white butterfly in a deep mine crosses language barriers more easily.
What a great story. 'A little angel passing in front of them' … could well be. Of course there are always logical, earthly explanations as well – just as there are always logical, earthly thinking people.
