Shades of Minority Report?

In the 2002 movie Minority Report, based on a short story by legendary – and visionary – writer Philip K Dick, criminals are arrested before they commit a crime. Three genetically altered humans, known as Pre-cogs, “see” crimes before they happen and a special law enforcement unit (Precrime) tracks down the would be offenders. The year? 2054.

Now, thanks to the close call Christmas Eve, perpetrated by the Nigerian “underpants” terrorist, Philip K Dick’s  fiction may become a reality in 2011.

According to AP writer Michael Tarm, machines that read minds may be in our future. They may not be the genetically altered humans from the Minority Report, but are nonetheless eerie – and disturbing. WeCU – we see you – is an Israeili-based company that combines high tech with behavioral psychology. The system is being tested in Israel and here’s how it works.

You’re at the airport, caught up in the usual stuff, pulling your suitcase behind you, wondering how long it’s going to take to get through security, if your plane will be delayed or the flight cancelled. But let’s say you’re a terrorist with a nefarious agenda instead of just some ordinary traveler, okay? So suddenly, an image flashes on one of the airport billboards – a symbol or something else that only a member of your terrorist organization would recognize. In other words, a familiar symbol or image appears in an unfamiliar place. Your body  responds – not in an overt  I need to get outta here sort of way but with an increased heart rate, an acceleration in breathing, sweaty hands, twitches, nervous glances. Sensors – machines and humans – pick up your reaction and you’re pulled out of line and subjected to more “enhanced” screening.

Aside from the aspects of big brother that are evident in this type of screening, there are some obvious problems. How are nervous passengers separated from would be terrorists? Honestly, who enjoys flying anymore? Stress levels rise as soon as many of us enter the airport and only increase with security routines that seem to be more reactive than anything else. One guy puts explosives in his shoes, so now everyone has to remove shoes and passengers can’t bring bottled water past the security check points, can’t carry more than 3 ounces of shampoo or any other liquid, and all of it has to be in a ziplocked Baggie. You know, the Baggie with that annoying plastic thing that’s supposed to zip the Baggie shut. Why that Baggie?

Now the underpants terrorist idiot comes along and we can’t use the restroom in the final hour of an international flight and our hands must be in full view during that last hour. We’re already being treated like middle schoolers. Now we’re being reduced to kindergartners.  What next? Everyone strip and bend forward before boarding a plane?

It seems to me that if the law of attraction actually works, then what we’re doing is attracting more would-be terrorists with increasingly ridiculous schemes, more reasons to feel stressed out while traveling, and more of everything that we don’t want. Wouldn’t it be wonderful if just one person in power understood the law of attraction and began the reversal of this cycle?

Even in Philip K Dick’s story – and in the movie – one of the members of the elite Precrime squad (John Anderton, played by Tom Cruise) sees the light when the Pre-cogs finger him as a suspect in a crime he hasn’t yet committed. But perhaps this is the way that fiction differs from real life.

UPDATE ON SEA LIONS AT PIER 39

On December 31, our post was about how the sea lions on Pier 39 in San Francisco have departed as mysteriously as they arrived 20 years ago. We all speculated about earthquakes, tsunamis, and other natural phenomena. So here it is, ten days later, and musing egret just left a comment about an ireport on CNN concerning a 6.5 quake in Northern California. Here’s the USGS report.

It sure looks as if the sea lions picked up on this.

Out of Nigeria

Nigeria has been in the news lately with the Christmas attempted terrorist attack originating there. So I asked Augustine Togonu-Bickersteth, of  Nigeria, who has posted synchronicities here, for his thoughts. I think you’ll find them interesting in that he couches his response in terms of the Chinese calendar.
+++

“All I can see now is that the young suicide bomber was born in the Year of the Fire Tiger (1986) by the Chinese calendar and we are approaching the year of the Metal Tiger in mid-February. The tiger is the mascot of the Nigerian Army. It’s the fiercest of the cat family.
“Still on metals, 1941 and 2001 were  the years of the Metal Snake, which occur once every 60 years. The two major attacks on United States soil were:  Pearl Harbor (1941) and the World Trade Center (2001).
“Interestingly, metal birds were the means of those attacks, airplanes bombing Pearl Harbor and striking the World Trade Center.”

+++

 We agree with Augustine, who said, “Beyond terrorism, we should emphasize the similarities between Nigeria and the U.S.”

To that end, we are posting two more of his trademark synchronicities, which compare U.S. and Nigerian leaders, pointing out the similarities in their backgrounds.

The first one: Bill Clinton and Olusegun Obasanjo. Both were presidents of their countries, the U.S. and Nigeria respectively. Clinton belonged to the Democratic Party and Obasanjo to the Peoples Democratic Party. They were both born on a Tuesday. They are both Baptist.

Clinton’s first name, William, begins with W, ends with M. Obasanjo’s first name, Matthew, begins with M, ends with W. Both first names are seven letters long. And, for good measure, both men were involved in sex scandals with women whose names start with M: Monica for Clinton, and Monisola for Obasanjo.

 Augustine also pairs Mike Akhigbe, a retired vice admiral of the Nigerian navy, and Admiral Mike Mullen, the current chairman of the joint chief of staff of the United States. Right off, we have two Mikes, and looking up Akhigbe, we found he does indeed go by the name Mike.

 Both men were born in 1946. Akhigbe served as the chief of the naval staff, Mullen was chief of naval operations. Akhigbe also served as chief of the general staff, a position similar to Mullen’s role as chairman of the joint chiefs. Mullen resigned as chief of naval staff on Mike Akhigbe’s  birthday, Sept. 29, 2007, and  Mullen became chairman of the joint chiefs on Oct. 1, 2007, which is Nigeria’s day of Independence.

Augustine, who also notes that both men attended Catholic schools, calls the comparison “a classic case of things happening in a meaningful manner.”

The way I see it, such comparisons show us that in spite of our differences, we are all inter-connected.

We ran across a blog this evening by Dr. Stephen Diamond, a forensic psychotherapist in L.A. He has a fascinating post on the unconscious psychology of terrorists.

The Serial Trickster

Archetypes – the trickster, the wise old man or woman,  the hero, the child – are as ancient as the planet. They bubble into the conscious mind from the collective unconscious, a repository of images common to all people. They’re found in mythology, folklore, fairy tales, legends, hallucinations, fantasies, and dreams, and in the tarot.  The archetype is so prominent in world mythology that Joseph Campbell called him The Hero with a Thousand Faces, the title of his book on the subject.

Movies and books often feature strong archetypal characters – Indiana Jones and Darth Vader come to mind immediately. And so does the character of Sméagol in Lord of the Rings. The sneaky, lurking Gollum is the classic trickster archetype. He usually had a private agenda of one kind or another that prompted him to mislead the hobbits – or hobbitses, as he called them-  on numerous occasions and to trick them into believing he could be trusted.

Trickster synchronicities can be compound or serial, where words, phrases, songs,  and numbers are repeated. Sometimes, serial trickster synchronicities happen when you’re least expecting them and in the most unlikely places.  One day Rob was waiting for his car to be serviced at an auto dealer.  He was surprised to discover a science magazine in the waiting room and even more surprised to find an article on quantum physics in that issue of Scientific American. A bit different from the usual People Magazine affair in waiting rooms. He’d just noticed that the author of the article was David Schumacher, and was wondering why the name was familiar, when a voice on the intercom said, “Schumacher,” the name of the dealer. Of course, that was it.

Rob glanced up and noticed a sign a few yards in front of him that read, Schumacher VW.  Perhaps the trickster simply wanted to drive home the point that synchronicities can happen anywhere, at any time, and you can even link quantum physics with a car dealer.

Dad, Mom, and their connection

 (The image is from soul cards. Check out the site. The art and the technique are astonishing).

 This synchronicity came from Sandie of Marietta, Georgia, who describes herself as a “hopeless romantic who tries to see the world through rose-colored glasses.” It illustrates the powerful emotional connections that exist among people even when they have been divorced for decades.
+++

My parents married 11/22/1941.  They divorced 7/5/1975.  My dad (1918) lived in LA and my mom (1919) lived here in Georgia.  My dad wanted the divorce to remarry, my mom always loved him.
In January my mother was taken to hospice and on January 30th around 7:30pm here in Georgia – she died.  We were still in her room and I received a call that my father – in LA – had just died suddenly from a heart attack, ten minutes earlier than my mother.
When my mom died – she had been in a coma – she opened her eyes and looked at Kristie (niece), Kelly (daughter) and me – and then held her hand upwards for someone to take her.  I think of course it was God – but hope it was my dad too.
What are the odds of that?
++
In a followup email, we asked Sandie if her parents had been in contact very much during the years since their divorce. She said they  came together when her brother died in 1997, but otherwise their contact was periodic. I’ve heard other stories like this and always wonder if agreements are made at some deep psychic level that one person will pass on first so he/she will be there  to greet the other when they die.

Dr. Rob or Karma Yoga-2

Recently, a yoga teacher from another country  e-mailed, saying she would be in town over the holidays and wondered if I still drove to Boca Raton for a particular yoga class and teacher. When Trish saw the e-mail, she was a little annoyed, wondering why I had to give her a ride, and where the hell did I meet her, anyhow. She likes to give me a hard time about the yoga women I know, who are mostly my students.

So a couple of days later, I was in a convenience store paying for gas when I noticed the guy in front of me wearing a t-shirt that on the back read : ‘Dr. Rob: Where does he get all these women?’ Back in the car, I told Trish about it. We laughed, wondered what it was about, then headed home.

That evening, we stuck a DVD in the player and a trailer came on for Deuce Bigalow: Male Gigolo, starring ROB Schneider. Trish deadpanned: “Synchronicity.”

Then the movie came on, High Fidelity, starring John Cusack, who plays a record store owner named ROB Gordon, and it was all about his string of girl friends, all of whom had dumped him. So during the movie, I kept saying where does Dr. Rob get all these women. Megan, who had joined us, wondered why I called the record store owner a doctor. “Oh, it’s just a little trickster synchronicity, Megan.”

“Yeah, and Dr. Rob better watch out or he’ll be advertising mattresses,” Trish added.

If that last comment puzzles you, see Karma Yoga.

What’s coming for MMX?

Since many of you are highly intuitive, we thought it would be fun to collect some predictions for 2010. Then next year we can take a look and see how we did.

You can be serious or humorous. You can predict what will happen in politics, to celebrities, to the economy. Who will emerge on the national scene, who will fade away? Who will be involved in a sex scandal? (Can we top Letterman and Tiger?) What will happen in the Mideast? How will Obama fare? What will Sarah Palin do? How will the fall elections in the U.S. go? What will happen on the terrorist front? What about wild weather? Those are  just a few ideas. Try to be as specific as possible.

For starters, here’s Rob: (1) Glenn Beck will be admitted to a psych ward for observation after an incident, but there will be a coverup and he will return to FOX News after a break to spend more time with his family. (2) A major sports figure will emerge as a leading Republican, possibly aiming for the White House. He’ll have a short name, a likable smile, and seem very down-to-earth. 3) Obama will face tough scrutiny in the fall from both the right and the left. His popularity will hit a low point. After the election, he starts to regain  momentum and does something quite surprising.

Here’s Trish: 1) Glenn Beck’s roommate in the psyche ward will be Rush Limbaugh 2) Tighter controls on Americans – not just in travel, but in every facet of life 3) More erratic weather patterns 4)The Dems barely hold onto Congress in the midterm elections and 4)the mind/body connection research takes new, unexpected turns

What’s your take on 2010?

On the Road with Gypsy

Photo by Marius Morar

We’ve posted a number of synchronicities involving dreams. This next one came from Gypsy Woman and as you’ll see, there are several layers to this synchronicity – a country, a road, a walking stick, and the photographer and blogger.

The dream sounds very much like a past life memory.  But we’ll let her tell it.
+++

I dreamed I was living in another time, long ago. I was dressed in several layered long skirts and tops and wore a fitted jacket that fell right below the waist. My hair was down and I had some sort of head scarf on. It was cold, not quite winter yet but cold. I  was carrying a valise of the time and it seems that all my belongings were in it.

  I was on foot traveling down a dirt road –  a rutted road that carts or wagons used as well which made it more difficult to walk. The road wandered through groves of trees and there were a few other people at times walking this road, as well. As I was walking, a side dirt road/path to my right intersected with the road I was on. As I neared the side road, I looked up to see a man there, walking toward the main road where I was. He  carried a sort of walking stick. Our eyes caught and as he neared me, I sensed that he was friendly and not to be feared. He spoke spoke as he approached a bit ahead of me and I called to him and asked where he was headed . He answered with the  name of a small village some way ahead.

I asked if  we might walk together and he said of course.  I tried to walk more quickly to catch up to him as he waited. I  was having difficulty walking because of a hip injury of some kind (somehow I think I had been shot) and told him Iwas unable to walk very fast because of it. He stood there a bit ahead, waiting as I came   up and said, “Here, perhaps this would help you. Take this.” He handed me the walking stick he carried as we began to walk together. Then I woke up with a searing pain in my right hip.

I’ve not been able to get this dream out of my mind today for some reason. As a matter of fact, it was so intense I even mentioned it to someone else today and said that in my dream, it seemed that I was either in the Ukraine, Hungary or Romania, but  Romania kept seeming to be the place.”

 +++
The next day, Jenean found a photograph on another blog –  at the top of the post – that was identical to the road and the man  with the walking stick she had seen in her dream. She wrote to Marius Morar, the blogger and the photographer and he allowed us to use the photo. This story is particularly striking in that Mr. Morar is Romanian. In an  email exchange, he said the young man with the stick is his seven-year-old son and the road is “from Romania, some 10 miles away, south of Cluj-Napoca, in the middle of historic Transylvania.”  So once again, the Internet acted as a conduit to something greater and was a vehicle for synchronicity.

The Two TVs

 Our impulses are often vehicles of synchronicity. We feel an urge to do something,drive somewhere, change our routine, and down the road a bit discover that the  impulse proved prescient. In this next story, an impulse purchase that a friend made proved to be synchronous. She asked to remain anonymous.

My grandfather is dying.  He’s opted not to have surgery for his cancer, a decision he made when my grandmother died a few years ago.  Anyway, his tumors have grown and made it uncomfortable to breathe.  He doesn’t have a lot of time left, so  I bought him a nice TV for Christmas, which may be seen  may be seen as stupid folly. But I did it anyway.  Something in my brain said it would be helpful because I doubted he could go out and mow the grass or go fishing much when it got down to the wire.  But he could enjoy TV.  I had no idea if he had a TV or how old it was. So I wanted him to have a nice one to focus on. I didn’t tell anyone, not even my husband. It was just an impromptu giant surprise.

So what happens? I get an email from my aunt, telling me that his TV conked out the day the new one arrived.
