While reading a book on synchronicity, Synchronicity and You, I read a paragraph out loud to Jimmy about the author traveling down the highway and the name Rushdie kept popping in his mind. Soon after, he saw the license plate Rushdie in front of him. That afternoon I went to the library and the first book in a cart of hundreds of books was by Rushdie. Later on, the librarian, without seeing the book in my hand, recommended I read a book by Rushdie.

Another Anagram

This is kind of funny. It comes from the British science magazine Nature, Dec. 11, 1975.

Sir Peter Scott, a naturalist and enthusiastic believer in the Loch Ness monster, was so confident that the creature’s existence would soon be proven that he promoted the use of a Greek name for it: Nessiteras rhombopteryx. This name, which he and underwater photographer Robert Rines coined in December 1975, may be roughly translated as “The Ness monster with diamond-shaped fin.”

London newspapers quickly and gleefully pointed out that the name is also an anagram for “Monster Hoax by Sir Peter S.”

Volcanoes

Today I joined Twitter and asked people to send their synchronicity stories. This one from Ray Getzinger showed up within ten minutes or so. I first met Ray years ago, when I received an e-mail from him about one of my books. He’s an avid reader and definitely has a great sense of story, as you’ll see from his synchronicity! He also wrote Girl With the Red Hair.

In 1980 I was working out of a tent at the Marine Corps Base Twenty Nine Palms California. One afternoon I was lying on top of my sleeping bag, reading a novel about an Icelandic romance. In one exciting scene they had to run from an impending volcano. I was so into the book that I almost missed the most important event of the day, heard on the radio.

Once I heard I focused on the real event. Mount St. Helens had just blown its top; the same mountain I had stared at out of the window of my high school classroom in Portland, Oregon twenty years earlier, America’s answer to Mount Fuji in Japan. Such beauty destroyed in an instant.

‘When the ice melts…"

Here’s an electoral/political synchronicity.

On February 16 in an interview with Rachel Maddow, Senator Amy Klobuchar of Minnesota predicted that no decision in the disputed Minnesota senate race between Norm Coleman and Al Franken would be made “until the ice melts on Lake Minnetonka.”

At 6 p.m. April 13, a three-judge panel determined that “Franken is entitled to receive the certificate of election” after defeating Coleman by 312 votes. Forty-two minutes later, the official ice-out was declared for Lake Minnetonka.

Norm Coleman apparently wasn’t impressed and decided to appeal.

After so many UFO synchronicities, I need a break. Tonight I was paging through one of the best books that Readers’ Digest every published – Mysteries of the Unexplained – and found a short, startling synchronicity involving numbers. Arthur Koestler,received it after the publication of his book, Roots of Coincidence. I’ve got no idea what it means, other than the possibility that the universe is a mathematical construct!

He was the 7th child of a 7th child, and had 7 brothers. On his 27th birthday, at a race card meeting, he looked at his race card to pick a winner in the 7th race. “The horse numbered 7 was called Seventh Heaven, with a handicap of seven stone. The odds were seven to one.” So what does Clancy do? You guessed it. He put 7 shillings on the horse and it finished 7th.

UFO Synchronicity

Dave Malcolm is a former contract worker at the navy’s secret AUTEC base on Andros Island. Dave, like Rob, was interviewed by the History Channel this past weekend for an episode of UFO Hunters. Yesterday morning he e-mailed us with a synchronicity that occurred while on Andros. Interestingly, we never told Dave about our blog. However, someone who knew he was going to Andros pointed it out to him, because of the mention here of Andros and AUTEC. Here’s Dave’s story:

“On my first night on the island I was watching the Discovery Channel and was startled to hear a guy named Craig Malcolm talking about UFO activity in the UK. I don’t know Craig, but as Malcolms we’re probably distantly related. So what are the odds that I would be watching a program on UFO activity on the night prior to my interview about a sighting I had 37 years ago, and would see another UFO witness interviewed in the UK by someone who shares my last name? Thought that would interest you.”

Shortly after I prepared this one, but before it was posted, a friend in St. Augustine, Florida sent this photo of a UFO that her son had taken yesterday. If you can expand it, you get a good view of the mysterious object.

Astrological Synchronicity

As some of you might know – at least those who watch FOX News – there’s a tax rebellion afoot today, a so-called Tea Party Day with rallies planned around the country protesting taxes and flaming fears of socialism. Although the supposed grassroots nature of this protest is dubious, to say nothing of the fact that the taxes being protested were put in place by the previous administration, it’s still a rebellion of sorts.

That said, the obvious reason that April 15 was picked for the protest is because it’s tax day. That’s logical – cause and effect.

HOWEVER, there’s something else going on today that I would bet 99.9% of the protesters are unaware of. It’s an astrological transit called Mars Conjunct Uranus. Today those two planets are in an exact conjunction.

Here’s what that means, according to Robert Hand, author of Planets in Transit: “No other transit is more conducive than this one to sudden upsets, rash behavior and surprising incidents. Energy seems to burst out all over the place and in surprising forms.”

Hand goes on to say: “It is a transit of rebellion and often indicates difficulties with others who may try to limit you in some way. Your relationships with authority figures are not likely to be very good, unless they are willing to give you a lot of room to do what you want.”

That’s a pretty good description of the mind-set of the libertarian-conservative movement behind this protest. Hence, unless astrologers are coordinating this protest (instead of corporate lobbyists in business suits), we have an astrological synchronicity for the day.

Update 2 on AUTEC

Bruce Gernan, co-author of The Fog and our pilot on the trip to Andros, called this afternoon to say he’d read the blog post about the trip and that we might want to update it. “I didn’t want to make a big deal out of this while we were flying,” he said. “But as we flew over AUTEC on our way out on Sunday, something happened to my radar.”

His radar, he explained, is a moving map GPS, pegged to satellites. It shows land masses, with names. So as we headed north from Andros, the closest islands – Nassau, the Berry Islands and Freeport would show up on the radar. “But as we flew over AUTEC, all the islands in the Bahamas disappeared from the screen.”

“How long did it last?” I asked.

“For the entire trip back to the U.S.”

An hour and 40 minutes. And yet, as we approached Freeport, where we turned east toward Florida, we could see the island through the windows. But the radar couldn’t detect it. “Is the equipment working now?”

“Yeah, I tested it this morning and it’s fine.”

He had lunch today with a couple of other pilots and told them about it. They were floored. “Impossible,” said one. “How do you explain it?”

Bruce shrugged. “I guess it’s just part of what happens in the Bermuda Triangle.”

Maurey and Travel synchronicities

I was reading a few stories on the Facebook synchroncity page this evening when a travel-related one caught my attention. Two women from a small town in Michigan went to Europe one summer. They knew each other, but neither knew the other was taking an overseas trip. So they ran into each other at the top of the Eiffel Tower. Surprise!

That reminded me that, from my own experiences, long-distance travel seems to generate such synchronicities. We are out of our daily routines, encountering new things in new places, and whether we know it or not, we are open to opportunities for meaningful coincidence.

One summer, while in Spain, my traveling partner and I kept running into an Australian named Maurey. It seemed that wherever we went, Maurey would show up. He wasn’t particularly friendly and never seemed surprised when we bumped into him.

After three weeks in Spain, we decided to go to Morocco. We ferried to Ceita and suddenly found ourselves in a culture where we didn’t speak the language, and couldn’t read the signs. We climbed into a bus with gaudy decor among the jalaba-wearing Moroccans. Several were involved in a heated argument near us and the Arabic music was loud and screechy. The bus was hot and dusty and my head was pounding when I noticed two Western men about three rows in front of us.

I tapped my friend on the shoulder. “You’re not going to believe it. There’s Maurey.”

We called out to him. Suddenly, he seemed like a long-lost friend. Maurey and the man next to him turned. To our surprise, Maurey was seated with the only other person we knew from our hometown who was traveling in Europe. But Dave was supposed to be in Sweden. We had no idea he planned to visit Morocco. But there he was…with Maurey.

That synchronicity from many years ago has always amazed me. Does anyone else have memorable travel synchronicities?

Secret Base Update

In a post called Secret Base (March 24), we mentioned AUTEC. We’ve added a photo we took of it over the weekend. The place definitely exists, everyone on Andros seems to know about it, but when pressed for details, few are talking!

While we were at the airport waiting for our ride to the hotel, I struck up a conversation with an airport employee who used to work at AUTEC. I asked if she knew anything about ‘The Dome.’ She nodded, glanced around uneasily, and in a soft, conspiratorial tone said, “Only the high commissioned officers are allowed in.”

“But what’s going on in there?” I asked.

“I don’t know. There are rumors.”

“What kind of rumors?”

And then we were interrupted. Figures, right? Later that night, at one of the local watering holes, we talked to a Bahamian man who is married to an AUTEC employee. They’ve been married for a dozen years and he claims his wife has never talked about her job. He doesn’t have any idea how much money she makes or what, exactly, she does there, except that she’s in “communications,” and has the “highest security clearance possible.”

The next night, at the same place, the wife was there. I spoke to her, said I was setting a novel on Andros and wondered what AUTEC actually is. A kind of force shield of silence surrounded this woman. Her answer? It sounded like it came out of the tourist guidebook: “AUTEC means Atlantic Undersea Test and Evaluation Center.”

“But what’s that mean?” I asked.

She shrugged. The shield of silence slammed into place completely.

The US government leases the land from the Bahamian government for a reputed 10 million a year.
