Jack the Ripper

Marcus Anthony is an intuitive analyst who coaches individuals and organizations how to use intuitive intelligence to create ideal futures. He published his synchronicity elsewhere as part of a longer article. He’s the author of Sage of Synchronicity. His web site is https://www.mindfutures.com

One day more than a decade ago I had a dream that the police were on the lookout for Jack the Ripper. He was lurking about, but he was being rather stealthy in his ways. I awoke with the dream fresh in my mind.

It wasn’t the kind of storyline that makes for a good start to your day. Still, it seemed to fit in with some of the self analysis I’d been doing on myself, related to my issues with women. Was there a part of me that contained the rapacious rage of Jack the Ripper? It wasn’t something I cared to dwell on. I shuddered and pushed the dream aside.

Later, I jumped in my car and drove towards the international boys school where I was working. As I was on the road I pulled up behind another vehicle. My eyes were suddenly drawn to a sticker on the back of the car in front of me. It read Jack’s Back! (an advertisement for whiskey). A shiver went down my spine. At school I entered my first class, a vibrant lot of rambunctious fourteen year olds. The previous night I had asked them to write the opening line of a mystery story. The first thing I was going to do was get some students to read that sentence aloud to the class. The boys shuffled in and I readied myself for the first task of the day. For me, this was in part, intuitive. I stood before the boys, looked around the class and sensed where the energy was coming from. This was a process I had learned from my spiritual teachers. When my eyes came to rest on James, a jovial, freckle faced fellow, I got the deep knowing that I was looking for.

James, can you read us what you have written?

James stood up happily and began to read. However he had done much more than what I had asked. He had not only written the opening sentence, but had also gone on and written the entire story. And he continued reading beyond the first sentence. I decided to go with the flow and let him continue.

James began to tell the story of a woman who had been brutally murdered and raped. My ears picked up. This was a bit too much of a coincidence to ignore. The story continued. The police went on a hunt for the man responsible. They found him and tried to arrest him, but he fought back.

The man turned and faced them like a wild animal, James spoke out. The policeman fired, and the man fell to the ground screaming. As he fell silent and death overtook him, a dark and horrible shadow rose out of the dead man’s body. It was the spirit of Jack the Ripper!

I gulped. OK, thanks for that James, I said. That was great. But I could not help myself. James, where did you get the idea for that story?

I dunno, he chirped back with typical teenage nonchalance.

Now skeptical readers might think I am not telling the truth in what I just wrote. Maybe I collapsed some things which happened at different times into one anecdote. But I have not. Those synchronous events: the Jack the Ripper Dream, the Jack’s Back sticker, and James’ Jack the Ripper story all happened within the space of about two to three hours.

Note though, that the final part emerged from my allowing the process to unfold in a way I had not expected, by releasing control and permitting intuitive intelligence to take over. If I had told James to stop reading after the first sentence, the synchronicity would not have reached its crescendo.

That synchronicity invited me to face something within myself, the part that had been deeply hurt by certain female figures from my childhood. It was related to sexual energy and what it means to be male. The universe spoke. It had something unpleasant to tell me, but I put aside my ego, my fear of my own shadow side. I listened and took the necessary action I was being asked to take.

This was very much part of my calling. At the beginning of my spiritual journey, I had asked Spirit that I might learn to love. A very simple request, but one which I felt was the essence of life s journey. At the time I put out that message I did not realize that this would require years of inner work. Four years later Spirit was continuing to answer the call through the medium of a freckle faced schoolboy. James did not say it, but his words contained the energy of a hidden meaning; love requires that we allow the light to penetrate our darkness, right to the core.

If I had known what was required for a guy like me to learn about love, I would have changed the order and put in a request for pizza instead! Spirit is a bit sneaky at times. It only gives us as much knowledge as we can handle at any given time.

Once you begin to work with Spirit, Spirit begins to work with you. The world is not a giant machine as western science would have us believe. In a sense the universe is more like a giant story, with you as a player in the story.

Synchronicity weaves together your vision, your mind, and the world. The messages are often profound. But sometimes they are a bit blunt, and the implicit meaning of the coincidence may be something that we’d prefer not to know!

Frogs and More Frogs

Time to talk about frogs.

For years, we’ve collected frogs of various sizes and material. They are spread about the house and Trish has a collection in her room. If we didn’t have enough of them from our own acquisitive efforts, friends have upped the ante adding to our collection. As I write this, there’s a little green frog with a gold crown resting at the base of my monitor.

Early in our relationship, before we started the collection, we began calling each other sapo and sapa, Spanish for frog. We see them as creatures of transformation.

When we moved into our current house nine years ago, the frog collection came along. On our first night in the house, as we set up our offices, we heard tapping sounds against the windows as if someone was standing in the dark trying to get our attention, and going from one window to the next. Then we spotted them: tree frogs! Lots of them. They smacked against the windows and stayed there, waiting for moths and other insects to fly toward the light in our rooms. Their large red eyes seemed to watch us. We didn’t mind. We took it as a good sign.

I was familiar with tiny tree frogs about the size of the tip of my index finger, which we saw frequently at our old house. But some of these tree frogs were ‘monsters,’ some as large as my fist. A bit of research found that they were Cuban tree frogs, a larger variety, that entered the Florida keys and South Florida in the 1920s.

Within days, our three cats discovered the tree frogs and the frogs discovered the cats. Some frogs died in the ensuing confrontation, the rest migrated. Our windows became silent at night. But a few years ago, the frogs came back and have remained as nightly window dressing. Every evening, they leap to the windows in our offices as we sit at our computers.

Somehow, frogs occasionally sneak into the house. We don’t know how they get in. But we always take it as a sign that something good is going to happen and, if we find one dead in the house, a not so positive sign. Two instances come immediately to mind.

In 1997, we came home from a vacation and found a dead frog in the family room. All three of us just looked at it, then Megan blurted, “Oh my God, this can’t be a good sign.” We were thinking, death in the family, because the frog was found in the family room. Two days later, my dad died.

In February of 2003, a month when we don’t usually see a lot of tree frogs, Trish hollered from the back of the house, “A frog, I just found a beautiful, healthy frog!” She picked it up and put it outside. We both wondered if its presence in the house portended something good. Later that afternoon, she received a call that she’d been nominated for an Edgar Allan Poe Award.

So the other night there were five frogs on my window! I’m waiting….

A Little Grrrr

Hmm. Life in TV world. Rob’s 90 minute-interview ended up on the cutting room floor. But, in all fairness, we got a free trip to Andros, terrific pics of AUTEC, met some cool people, had some weird experiences, made some great contacts. What’s there to complain about?

– Trish

PS And to the guy at the watering hole whose wife works at AUTEC. Were they sweating bullets tonight because of the comparisons to Area 51?

Look here: Secret Base
And here: Secret Base Update
Another: Filming
Yet another:Bermuda Triangle

PPS To the lady at the airport who had been an AUTEC employee: many thanks for speaking so freely about your experiences there, particularly when I asked you about the “dome.”

Bangers and Mash

Dave Malcolm, a former employee at the secret navy base AUTEC, who will be on the History Channel with Rob this evening, offers this synchronicity about an ethnic meal.
***

I travel frequently for business but very seldom receive an invitation to have dinner with a co-worker and their family. On my recent trip to Canada in April I was invited to the home of a colleague who was of Iranian heritage, born in India. I was surprised to hear his wife was preparing bangers and mash, a meal of sausage and mashed potatoes. This is a British dish I am familiar with since I’m Scottish. I thought it odd that an Iranian-Indian in Canada would serve this meal, but guessed the British influences in those countries was responsible. I hadn’t heard the name or had the dish bangers and mash in many years and enjoyed it.

Fast forward to last Saturday. While shopping in NJ for a Mother’s Day plant, I ran into one of my uncles, who had just returned from Scotland after attending a family wedding. He described a non-typical wedding feast; the wedding cake was a tower of cup cakes. And the entrée was…bangers and mash.

Tree Trimming Mystery

Sometimes synchronicities can involve very mundane, everyday activities, such as the following one.

One afternoon last week, I attempted to lop off about 20 feet of an avocado tree in my backyard. It had grown straight up about 35 feet with only small branches. A neighbor had suggested that trimming it would allow it to fill out.

I focused on this matter every time I walked into the backyard for the next week, stared at the tree, wondering if I should hire someone for the task or try it myself.
Being a do-it-yourself-type, I chose to rev up my chain saw. But I took my time, trying to figure out how to make the cut so the tree wouldn’t fall into the neighbor’s yard and onto their RV.

Finally, I went to work. However, I was only able to cut through about three-quarters of the trunk when the chain saw became wedged. Nasty business jerking on the chain saw while balancing high up on a ladder. After working it free, I decided to try to pull the top of the tree over. So I tied a rope around it as high as I could reach, then tugged hard toward my yard. But no luck. I couldn’t pull it down. I told my neighbor she might want to move her RV forward, just in case, but she said her husband had the key and was out. She didn’t like the looks of it and said I should get a tree-trimming company to finish the job. I assured her the tree was leaning away from her RV and I’d finish the job myself.

So the next morning, I took a look again. The tree was still standing and tiling inward toward my yard. I decided that I would try again after we got back from the gym before it fell onto my nearby mango tree.

An hour and a half later, we came home to find the tree all neatly chopped and stacked out by the road. Two doors down a tree company was busy trimming a large live oak. I assumed that my neighbor had asked them to finish the job for me.

I thought I should pay the guys something. So I walked down and thanked them for cutting it down. But to my surprise, they said they didn’t do it. “We would never do that without the owner’s permission,” one man said.

Puzzled, I talked to the neighbors, and found out that the tree had fallen on top of their RV. They weren’t too pleased, because they thought we’d just left it there for them to clean up. Which they did.

I apologized and told them that the tree should’ve fallen the other way. A few minutes later, I went out to get the mail and to my surprise all the branches were gone! Again, I turned to the tree trimmers figuring they’d picked them up for some reason. The regular vegetation pickup was two days away. But they were still at work on the tree and piling branches on the roadside. There was no sign of the distinctive avocado leaves, and no reason that they would move the trimmings from the front of my house a hundred yards away.

I talked to the neighbors again and they were as baffled as I was. The chopped up tree had simply vanished within half an hour.

Okay, so there’s probably a logical explanation, and skeptics, I’m sure, wouldn’t find anything mysterious about this matter. But, for me, the synchronicity was the manifestation of the tree trimming company working so close by, yet having no involvement in the chopping, stacking or removal of the tree.

Seriously, What Are the Odds?

Here’s an article on synchronicity, written by Dick Cavett, that appeared in the New York Times on May 8, 2009.

Cavett doesn’t use the word synchronicity, which is surprising. He also refers to Freud, but doesn’t mention Jung. It’s almost as if he is just awakening to the idea that something mysterious might be going on.

There are numerous comments by readers that follow the article. What astonished me was how many belittled the idea of ‘meaningful coincidence,’ and looked for rational ways of explaining these co-incidents. Still others just laughed it off. Some, however, recognized a bigger picture at work, beyond cause and effect.

A friend of mine was meeting his soon-to-be in-laws for the first time. They had driven from a faraway state. Their license plate, he saw, consisted of an unusual, arcane scientific term: something like “GENTFRETS.” Let’s call it that.

Nothing strange so far, except that the families had never met, and my friend’s father’s license plate, relating to his profession, also read: “GENTFRETS.”

That baffling phenomenon — coincidence — intrigues me more and more as instances spice up my own life with their mysterious improbability. I’ve had some doozies.

The I Ching meets a dream…

Here’s another one from Adele, a quite dramatic sequence of inner activity that took place at a time of considerable change in her life. Interestingly, the dream world and the I Ching, the Chinese divination system, come together in this one. She has another synchronicity called Astro-Yoga.

***
This synchronicity occurred within a dream, and related to a question posed to the I Ching. It left me feeling certain of the validity of both realms of symbolic meaning.

Years back, shortly after separating from my husband I wanted to get in touch with an old friend whom I’d heard had also recently divorced. I didn’t know how to reach him, but my desire was strong.

I had a dream where I saw a white horse with wings flying in the sky. I had no idea what this dream meant, but loved the imagery and felt it was a strong message of something truly extraordinary.

I asked the I Ching to give me some insight into the meaning of the dream. The response I got was Hexagram 22, Grace, with the 4th line changing. The Wilhelm translation for this changing line is:

/”Grace or Simplicity?
A white horse comes as if on wings.
He is not a robber,
He will woo at the right time.”/

I had goose flesh when I read that. Not only did the I Ching reflect my dream with eerie accuracy, but the next day the person I wanted to see called me.

This event happened years ago and the dream held broad ramifications for me. The synchronicity of the white horse in the dream and the I Ching and the ensuing connection with the person I had in mind was just the beginning of a series of life-changing events.

Underwater Area 51

We’ve posted several stories about synchronicities involving Rob’s appearance on the History Channel’s UFO Hunters, for an episode involving AUTEC, the Navy’s equivalent of Area 51. The episode that was filmed on Andros Island in the Bahamas in early April involves a book, The Fog, which Rob co-authored with pilot Bruce Gernon, who had an extraordinary experience in the Bermuda Triangle in the early 1970s. The posts are: 3/15, Bermuda Triangle; 3/24, Secret Base; 4/12, Rainbows and Fog; 4/14,Update 2 on AUTEC; 4/16 UFO Synchronicity, 4/16 Secret Base Update

Just this evening, I asked Rob if he’d heard from the people at the History Channel about when the episode would air. He said he’d written the producer the other day, but hadn’t heard back from him. I made some disparaging remark about how they probably didn’t know yet or would forget to notify him. Minutes later, I went into gmail and found this note:

Hey there,

The UFO Hunters A.U.T.E.C. SHOW is scheduled to air Wednesday May 13th at 10pm (9pm Central) on The History Channel.

It’s called: UFO Hunters “Underwater Area 51”

Of course… the air date could change at the last minute… and some cable/satellite providers air it at different times so check your local listings and set your DVR.

Thanks so much for all your help.

Jung, Pauli, and Peat

Jung Institute, Zurich
***
F. David Peat, a theoretical physicist who worked with the legendary physicist David Bohm in the 1970s, wrote Synchronicity: the Bridge Between Science and Matter, one of the seminal books about synchronicity. He now lives in Pari, Italy and runs the Pari Learning Center. Given his scientific background, his insights into synchronicity are unique.

He sent the following story to us in an e-mail. It’s about his visit to the Jung Institute in Bollingen, Switzerland, where Jung lived during the last years of his life. Peat gave a lecture there to celebrate the institute’s 50th year. He refers to Wolfgang Pauli in this story, a physicist and early supporter of Jung’s research into synchronicity. Peat’s previous story on this blog is Golden Scarab. The reference to 137 is the topic of a February 21 post, Wolfgang Pauli and 137.
***

You may know that Pauli was very interested in the size of the Fine Structure Constant 1/137 because all the other constants of nature are very large or very small, but 137 is a human sized number. When Pauli was ill, he went into hospital and asked his assistant what room they had put him in. It was 137. Pauli said “Now
I know I’ll never leave.”

I arrived at the hotel next to the institute, was given a key and told my room was on the second floor of the annex. I didn’t go to my room at once but went down to the lake. The idea was to get something of the spirit of Jung – but after half an hour, nothing happened at all. So I thought I’d go back to the hotel, sleep and maybe have a dream about Jung. I took the elevator to the second floor, removed the key from my pocket and it was 137! And so I realized I was there to talk about Pauli and not Jung.

That evening I told the story about the key and an old man at the back laughed. Later when I wrote an equation on the board, the same old man said, “It won’t work.”

I replied, “Oh, the spirit of Pauli is in the room.”

At the reception I asked who the old man was. It turned out that he was an assistant who was with Pauli in the hospital.

The occasion of the various talks at the Institute was its 50th anniversary. Some time later I learned that Pauli had given the inaugural talk. While he was speaking he felt “let it all pour out” and at that moment a vase of flowers broke and water poured over the table.

Astro-Yoga

Adele Aldridge is an artist and Internet entrepreneur who designs T-shirts that combine yoga postures and astrological signs. As she explains here, she was surprised to discover that someone actually teaches Astro-Yoga. And how appropriate to make that discovery on a synchronicity blog.
***

I experience many synchronicities that I put into several different categories: I Ching, dreams, Internet events, and In-the-world events.

It feels appropriate to present my first synchronicity here by writing about my encounter with this blog and Rob and Trish’s website, Astro-Yoga.

I’ve been working on my own visual and poetic personal interpretation of the I Ching for many years and recently began the process again with new images to post on my blog. The use of I Ching is synchronicity itself. Carl Jung coined the word and now we all take it for granted as if the word had always been part of our language.

So one day when I happened across this blog I was delighted to find a place devoted to personal stories of synchronicity. It was actually a wonderful synchronicity to find the site.

But what hit me between the eyes was when I discovered that Rob and Trish have another blog called Astro-Yoga. I have a series of designs called Astro Yoga Babes for my YogaBabe Cafe store. I also have an interest in astrology and thought a yoga pose for each sign of the zodiac would be fun to create for Yoga Babe T-shirts and other products. So when I recently found that there was someone who was actually teaching yoga with the astrological signs in mind I had that sense of being in tune with a much larger force. And the name, Astro-Yoga! Wow. I just wish I could be in his yoga classes.
